Assumptions: We re-sign Kosier, Sensy, and Bowen. In FA, we pick up a FS. MBIII and Colombo are released. Newman's contract is restructured.
Round 1
T Smith, OT, USC, 6-5, 307 lbs.
Remember, no trades in this mock draft. Peterson is gone along with Darius, Von Miller, Gabbert, Newton, and Fairley. Cowboys show no real interest in either WR.
After Smith's Pro Day, he confirms his Top 10 pedigree. During his rookie year, Smith starts at RT and in case of injury to Free, he also acts as the swing tackle during game day. (Barron is gone.) Though JJ doesn't draft OL in Round 1, Smith has too much upside, and if he were to stay in school one more year, he's a potential top 5 pick. Suddenly, the Cowboys have two of the most athletic OTs in the NFL. Clear starter ability at RT during his rookie year.
Round 2
C Heyward, DE, Ohio State, 6-5, 294 lbs.
Heyward would have been a Round 1 pick, except for his elbow injury driving his value temporarily down. Heyward also has versatility to play various positions on the DL in RR's scheme, and he can easily get his size up to 300+ pounds over the next year or two. Potential starter ability his rookie year, and worst case significant snaps in rotation.
Round 3
Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia, 6-1, 198 lbs.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Dowling go in Round 2, but he has been knicked up the past season. As a result, he falls to the Cowboys early in Round 3. Importantly, he has eventual starter ability a couple years down the line. Until last season, he was a real playmaker and relatively durable. I think he has potential starter ability as early as 2012.
Round 4
J Moffitt, OG/Center, Wisconsin, 6-4, 319 lbs.
Moffitt will provide depth in 2011, but he could potentially replace either Bigg or Gurode in 2012 (if Gurode is moved to OG, for example, in case Bigg is released in 2012). Moffitt is a real pile mover in the running game and he is also intelligent enough to make line calls at the Center position.
In 2012 the right side of our OL could actually be a strength with Moffitt and T Smith.
Round 5
Nate Irving, ILB, NC State, 6-1, 240 lbs.
N Irving had a very good Pro Day. He showed good athleticism and ran the 40 around 4.68/4.7 sec. But more importantly, he has instincts for the position. Irving was also first team All-ACC and had 20.5 tackles for loss last season. His best position could be ILB in a 34. The Ravens were among the teams at his Pro Day by the way and showed interest in him. Irving does have starting potential, but not for a couple years most likely.
Round 6
Ronald Johnson, WR, USC, 5-11, 199 lbs, 4.46 40
R Johnson will be a quality slot wideout for the Cowboys. Importantly, Johnson also is an excellent punt returner, averaging 14.2 yards/return. As a result, Johnson should be able to contribute immediately.
Alternate: Stephen Burton, WR, West Texas A&M, 6-1, 221 lbs, 4.3/4 40 Obviously Burton is more of a "project", but we supposedly have the best WR coach in the NFL.
This player could be worthwhile to develop. If there is one thing that the Cowboys have been good at the past few years is finding quality wideouts the later part of the draft or as UDFAs.
Round 7a
Da' Norris Searcy, SS, North Carolina, 5-11, 223 lbs, 4.55 40 (27 reps)
I'm assuming we sign a quality FS in FA, and AOA backs up that veteran FS. We re-sign Sensy, and Searcy is the primary back-up to him. This is a player the Cowboys have shown interest in. He is a playmaker and was also their punt returner, which is quite impressive. He has the potential to cover TEs as well.
Round 7b
Andrew Jackson, OG, Fresno State, 6-5, 299 lbs.
Was one of the top ranked OGs going into last season until he was injured. Has good size, long arms, and is strong like a bull, especially in the upper body. He is a guy that Houck can mold into a quality back-up to start with and maybe into something more a couple years down the line. I'd like to see him complete for Kosier's spot after 2 years.
Finally, I think we will be able to pick up a RB like Allen Bradford or Clay as an UDFA to replace MBIII as the power back (whenever the league permits teams to actually sign UDFAs given the lockout).
Would appreciate your comments.
