One NFL Team Has Medically Flunked Vander Esch; Others Have Second-Day Grades

One of the late-rising prospects during the leadup to the 2018 NFL Draft has been Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. He put together some excellent workouts for teams, showing speed and athleticism in his 6-foot-4, 256-pound frame. Injuries limited Vander Esch to six games in 2016, but he exploded as a junior with 141 tackles with 8.5 tackles for a loss, four sacks, four passes broken up and three interceptions. That injury history, however, has still comeback to bite Vander Esch, as BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1 has learned that one team has removed him from their draft board after flunking him medically.

Sources from four teams said they felt Vander Esch belongs on the second day of the 2018 NFL Draft and would go there. Two other team sources thought Vander Esch could go late in the first round. One team that flunked him medically said they had a third-round grade on Vander Esch before the medical report ruled him out.

"To me, he's a third-round talent, but probably will go higher," said an AFC general manager. "He has gotten a lot of hype, but he plays soft. He's too much like Paul Posluszny for me. He's a good player and will have a lot of tackles, but most of them will come four yards downfield. He's not an impact-at-the-line guy like a Ray Lewis, Luke Kuechly, Jon Beason or Brian Urlacher."

Helping Vander Esch to go in the first round are teams not having 32 first-round grades. It varies by team, but in the final dozen picks of the first round, there will be players with second-round grades getting selected because there are not enough true first-rounders. Vander Esch could be one of those players, but medical concerns also might cause him to slide to Day 2 of the 2018 NFL Draft.

anyone know the nature of the medical? or is this another smokescreen?

1 week from the draft, and rumours heat up about a top prospect. Team(s) will put info out there in the hope it will affect his draft stock, so they will fall to them. You don't need to be Sherlock to work out which team(s) maybe putting these rumours out there to media friends, just look at teams in the bottom half of the draft say teams from 22 to 32, and which of those teams need help at LB.

what are the chances it was this team? I would guess it was 0%, because our GM/Son are too busy tying up all the loose ends for the huge Draft Day Bonanza $$$$

I've been saying we would trade to the top of the second for him but we may just wait.

I never said it was Dallas as much as we need a LB, we can take one day 2, I would say the team in question is hoping Steele, LVE at the bottom of the 1st.

I've read Philly but can't remember the details. I kinda just ignored it because it was immediately shouted down by reporters.

I would say Pittsburgh, they lost Shazier, they need a LB to come in straight away he is the type of player that suits their defence.

IMO he looks to be flexible enough to play either inside in a 3-4 or 4-3. Definitely think he goes round 1 to his combine/size/potential.
And yea, can definitely see Pitt going after him if he falls past the non playoff teams.

I had a thread with same info locked coz considered bogus. Is this new info from a reliable source?

To my knowledge, Chris Mortensen along with Walterfootball have floated this out there. It just sounds like someone is trying to slow the roll he has been on as he has been rising through the process. Fact is, if he is a bad medical, a lot of teams have brought him in and should know for themselves.

Yea but it's not like they're reporting as THEIR opinion and it's not just one team. IDK but it's enough to at least make you pause, at least for me.

injury Concerns on Vander Esch?

Earlier today a report on Rotoworld surfaced that stated Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch had received a failing medical grade from more than one team and was being dropped from boards.

I can tell you from the information I saw at the combine that this is not the case.

Combine prospects are medically graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the absolute best. I was privy to grades for many front-seven prospects, including the grade for Vander Esch; and while it wasn’t perfect, it was at the top end. Vander Esch also was not asked to return for the combine recheck, which would have been a sure sign that there were remaining red flags.

The Boise State product received a grade higher than the ones assigned to Roquan Smith and Lorenzo Carter of Georgia. And while medical exams differ team by team, there’s little chance of such a huge disparity between a prospect being at the top end of one grading scale and the other end of another.

Haven’t we already covered all of this I’m another thread??
