and it's not about the D, it's the O, it seems Wade has brought over San Diego's TE system, where he has Antonio Gates stretch the middle of the field, which opens up alot of room for LT to run, hopefully Witten stretching the D will create alot of room for JJ and Barber this year

thoughts? or maybe it's Garrett? I'm not too sure on how the '90s Cowboy's offense was run w/ the TE, maybe we did the same thing w/ Novachek(SP), having him stretch the middle of the field?

It's JG TE system that comes from the 90's system with Jay Novacek.

:laugh2:

I was trying to figure out what he means by being "slow"! Maybe cowboyz thinks Witten is a wideout!

I'm pretty sure Wade has gone into meetings and has suggested to Garrett that he try to use the TE in more of a verticle role if possible. From there, Garrett employs his system to fit that mold.

My point being, Wade gives Garrett ideas of what he wants, and Garrett institutes his ideas with his own creativeness.

Yeah, Novceck did stretch the field quite a bit. I've heard a couple of times that Witten will be used much like Jay was used in that early 90's offense.

So, I'd say that Garrett using Witten like Novaceck is more accurate than it is to say we're going to be using Witten like San Diego uses Gates.

Witten... Slow? Errr, not for a big TE he isn't. He's pretty **** fast for a TE actually. He gives LB's fits with his speed.

It's Garrett's offense with Wade giving approval. In 2004 we were using Witten on a lot of deep routes and it reeked havoc on opposing LB's because so many teams play the Cover 2 and not many LB's can handle Witten in pass coverage. In 2005 we had to keep Witten in shorter patterns because of the issues at offensive tackle. But it was weird that we didn't get back to having Witten going deep last year.

I like the idea given Witten's ability and the amount of teams that play Cover 2 in the NFL. I also think it will force the defense to choose to either defend Witten deep or worry about Owens coming across the field on the underneath stuff. And moving Owens around and putting him into the slot should make a difference in his play instead of using him to mostly run deep routes.

Ran the 40 time in 4.67.

Shockey ran a 4.64 time,

Kellen Winslow ran a 4.62

Todd Heap ran a 4.65.

Chris Cooley ran a 4.87

So if you're in the 4.6's for a TE, you're probably likely to give LB's fits in coverage. And even Chris Cooley gives LB's fits despite having a slow 40 time.

Willing to bet all those TE run pretty close to their 40 times in gear also.

Cooleys 40 time was run without a helmet, thus giving him optimum resistance due to the doo. With his helmet on he runs a 4.34.

in 2004 did witten stretch the field? it seemed to really spread out the defense and help the offense

having TO or glenn with him will cause the safeties to get caught in a bind, just like what teams did to the cowboys late in the season. or the giants game.

but it's the speed of TO and glenn that stretches the field not witten. witten becomes a beneficiary. put witten and keyshawn out there and you got nothing.

stretching the field means opening up space for others, TEs don't do that. they cause mismatches.

and just so i get this straight, are you trying to say witten is just as fast as winslow and shockey?

or is it that cooley stretches the field with his speed?
