One thing to consider with Garrett

I read an article by Andrew Brandt this weekend that the Cowboys have $30m of dead money this season -- not including the additional $5m the NFL took away for the Cowboys supposedly cheating on the Austin contract.

Essentially, what that means is the Cowboys only have 75% of the money that presumably most/many of the other teams in the NFL have to build their rosters.

That dead money is on Jerry. Garrett has no control (that I know of) over that.

That's a hell of a handicap.

Adam --- is that $30m of dead money correct?

How much dead money is projected for the 2013 season at this point?

The Cowboys always operate with dead money, so he should get used to it.

So he can't properly design plays around his current roster because of dead money?

He's not allowed to manage games the right way?

We need to run guys 20 yards deep into coverage on 3rd down when all we need is 5 yards?

I don't think Garrett is anything but a mediocre coach at this stage of his career, however, if the opposing team is able to field more talent, retain more talent, and recruit more talent in FA because they have 25% available cap space -- it's a huge disadvantage for the Cowboys.

It shows up most in the bench -- ie look at the terrible state of the backups for the OL and safeties, and LBs for example. They are literally taking guys off the street and they are starting the very next week. That's how the dead cap space hurts.

They managed the game just fine with 1 min left and needing a FG to tie. 3rd and 2 and they ran for the first down. They called for a pass on a third down during the game: OH NOES!!!

What's hurting us is playcalling / design & the Oline.

We can't do anything about the coach and they actually spent quite a bit of money on the Oline so I don't give him a pass.

If he weren't such a terrible coach I believe we're at least 2 games better with the current roster and sitting pretty.

Hiring a good coach does not count against the cap. In this era of parity it is one of the few places teams with money can gain an advantage, so having so much dead money should be an incentive to get a better coach in here not the other way around.
