There was a documentary on that man done, about how his condition developed, etc. It was shown in the town square so that people would treat him better, because there's still a real person behind the medical issue. One can't even imagine the amount of gawkers and rude comments he must hear.

He didn't want to get the surgery done to remove it because his religion prohibited blood transfusions.

There was another doctor that was going to do multiple, smaller surgeries to avoid having to do the transfusion, but he got too scared to do it and canceled the procedure.
