Only 3 DEs on roster?

Maybe my mind is drawing a blank, but I can only think of three DEs on the current roster until Spencer and Lawrence come back. And there's a chance, maybe slight, that neither of them will come back. The three guys I can think of are Selvie, Mincey and Crawford. I'm not gonna include roster bubble guys who I can't even name.

Now, looking at our DT position, you can be a glass half empty guy/gal and say "We're doomed if we have to rely on Minter, Coleman and Bishop." But at least we can say that we have some young DTs (to go along with Melton, McClain, and even Okoye and Hayden). But we can't even say that about DE. I literally can't name someone at DE besides Selvie, Crawford and Mincey.

This has me thinking about the LB situation and the role of Bruce Carter. We seem to have 4 guys fighting for 3 LB spots. I'm wondering if we should move Wilber back to DE since we literally only have 3 DEs on the roster. We aren't exactly loaded at LB either, but at least we have more potential starters than starting positions.

So, what does everyone think: 1) are there DEs I didn't think of? 2) do we have any Minters at the DE position? 3) should we take advantage of Wilber's versatility? 4) are we doomed?

Boatright, Kenneth
Lawrence, DeMarcus
Mincey, Jeremy
Rayford, Caesar
Selvie, George
Wilson, Martez
Crawford, Tyrone

Wilber will not be on the field in the Nickel defense as a SLB. That will make him available to be a Nickel DE.

They had Carter practicing as a pass rusher last week.

So basically the only guys you mentioned that I didn't were Boatright, Rayford and Wilson.

Rayford couldn't make the team last year when we were desperate. Boatright keeps getting mentioned as a practice squad guy. Maybe Wilson makes the team just so we have bodies. But is Wilson really any good?

I think Wilson is pretty good and if put on the field with guys other than backups I think he can be very effective. This is why in preseason you look at individual performance over team since if he get a chance it will not be with other 2nd and 3rd stringers on the field it will be with starting players

That's good to hear. I'm just worried because I haven't heard anything positive about the DEs. Like at all. The safety Dixon got a lot of praise, and lately DTs Coleman and Minter have. Even veteran LB like Durant. But not a peep about DE.

Right now we have yet to even get the starting unit out there as a whole. That is a concern but then I saw a lot of improvement this past weekend with defense as compared to what they were able to do in week 1 of pre season. Outside of a fumble return for a TD and a kick return Ravens offense did not do that much vs the starting front and even those guys were not all projected starters.

You're pretty much right. The only three that we have that are roster worthy at this time (outside of Spencer and Lawrence) are Selvie, Mincey and Crawford ... and two of those guys are roster worthy IMO because we simply don't have any real competition for them.

I haven't seen enough from Boatright, Rayford or Wilson to say they are worth keeping. Same goes for Dartwan Bush.

We'll probably end up keeping one of the lower-end guys simply for numbers until Lawrence returns, but frankly none of them deserves a spot so far. The pressure from these guys has been hit and miss, but mostly miss.

It's the list. I'm not asking you to do anything with it.

I omitted Dartwan Bush.

Technically we have more than 3, but I don't blame you. Not a single one is worth remembering.

It's not surprising you haven't heard a peep. It's common knowledge that DE is a weakness for us right now. We are just hoping our guys can make do.

How much real cap room do we have to sign a WDE.

The scarcity of resources principal makes the demand (price) irrelevant

Maybe they should start putting some RBs or WRs on DE. Since we move around LBs like a street perfomer moves the shells and ball and any DL can be a 1,3,5 - Surely Boyd or Byrd can put their hand on the ground rip, dip and turn left.

You have to have some money left over to play the rest of the season. I don't know our cap. I assume its enough to bring one less than top notch tiered rush DE.

Its a sellers market, but dumping $5m on a guy who may get 3 sacks isn't a ROI

We have enough to sign anyone who will be available in free agency.

It is not like some high profile expensive free agent will just shake loose.

You would be fortunate to get someone who gets you 3 sacks at this stage of the offseason.

We made this bed by putting all our eggs in the Lawrence basket, plus the additional gamble with Spencer.

Sorry, signing Jeremy Mincey is not a legitimate healthy shot at getting top shelf talent rushing off the edge.
