If we do not go all out on defense.. Draft, acquisition, trade etc. we will never sniff "deep playoffs"

We need to make it that, even though Romo is much much more than a bus driver, we need defense to take most of the pressure off of the offense and turn this team into ball control and running team.

That is our only chance.

Not bashing Romo. I am a supporter. But I have seen enough to know that it can only happen this way.

I think most quality teams need a defense to hold late leads and not put the QB in a position where he must drive the field. There were some games had we had a decent defense big leads would not have melted away.

I agree and personally would approach the offseason in that manor, but can it happen in a year.....very unlikely.

For comparisons sake, Seattle had a good defense, then they were able to get Cliff Avril an Michael Bennett below market value. We have a bad defense and I would think it's unlikely some free agents view us as a spot to increase their value.

I agree we need lots of help on d.......
.I've been wrong before but I don't think this team is close to making a deep run ...
I think we should be positioning for 2-3 yrs down the road.

This can be said for 90% of the teams in the league. No one is going to make a deep run except Denver and maybe GB if Aaron plays a full season.

Assuming there is no complete overall of the current lame-duck coaching staff after this upcoming season, assuming they draft quality defensive players in the upcoming draft, assuming they acquire free agents who can fill-in due to injury or player attrition, assuming Jerry does not agree to bad contracts for aging players, in the most optimistic situation it would take a minimum of 2 years to develop of playoff-caliber defensive team.

Too many assumptions ~ especially with Jerry being the final decision-maker.
The reason to draft Romo's replacement earlier rather than later, is it creates the optimal (assuming the defense performance improves dramatically) opportunity of possessing a strong defense with a solid offense, let's say by the 2017 season.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Or are you just saying they have remarkable QBs that are good enough to ride their arms all the way to a championship?

I think, without changing a single thing philosophically, you'd see us running the ball more often if we were playing better pass defense. I believe this current team--if we magically were a top ten pass defense--would be capable of beating anybody in the NFC on any given Sunday. Now, that's a stupid thing to say because we're a bottom-of-the-league pass defense right now. The real question for me is: how much can a team realistically improve it's pass defense in a single offseason without a scheme change and with limited cap room?

Can we get to mediocre? I don't think that's out of the question if we add the right 3-4 starters and find some depth through the draft and CFA. In that scenario, too, we'd have enough young players that you might even see the team starting to play better at the end of the season as they hit their stride and build some confidence. Our passing game is capable of putting pressure on teams, and we've seen that that can make them make mistakes. We just need to be able to cut down on the big back breaking pass plays that extend drives that statistically should be stalling, and keep up the rate of turnovers we saw through the first half of the season.

Now, bear in mind, we have to improve those starters knowing we're going to lose maybe our best defensive player from last year in the process. That makes things a lot dicier for me. I've got some hope for some of the young players we have coming up, but it's tough when you're really bad to start with, and then you lose Jason Hatcher right out of the gate.

Yes, saying they are good enough to overcome a bad defense for the most part. As for the other teams, some form of a respectable defense is needed. Not saying a top 5 but respectable, middle of the road with a decent to a good offense.

I stand by my opinion, teams go far into the playoffs by their defense, whether it be stopping the run and/or the pass. For this Dallas team, if they can get in the 12-15 range, their offense is good enough to make a run in the playoffs and can beat anyone on any given Sunday.

It all starts with the defense, if they can get better, we have more options on offense to play with like more running, etc.

I still think the offense needs twinked but that might work itself out with a better defense, specifically a pass defense. The way it is now, our offense isn't even close to carrying the defense through 16 games and that seems to be the philosophy ATM.

Get the defense to average, tweak the offense and we might have a decent chance.............................
