I don't think that's necessarily true. Or are you just saying they have remarkable QBs that are good enough to ride their arms all the way to a championship?
I think, without changing a single thing philosophically, you'd see us running the ball more often if we were playing better pass defense. I believe this current team--if we magically were a top ten pass defense--would be capable of beating anybody in the NFC on any given Sunday. Now, that's a stupid thing to say because we're a bottom-of-the-league pass defense right now. The real question for me is: how much can a team realistically improve it's pass defense in a single offseason without a scheme change and with limited cap room?
Can we get to mediocre? I don't think that's out of the question if we add the right 3-4 starters and find some depth through the draft and CFA. In that scenario, too, we'd have enough young players that you might even see the team starting to play better at the end of the season as they hit their stride and build some confidence. Our passing game is capable of putting pressure on teams, and we've seen that that can make them make mistakes. We just need to be able to cut down on the big back breaking pass plays that extend drives that statistically should be stalling, and keep up the rate of turnovers we saw through the first half of the season.
Now, bear in mind, we have to improve those starters knowing we're going to lose maybe our best defensive player from last year in the process. That makes things a lot dicier for me. I've got some hope for some of the young players we have coming up, but it's tough when you're really bad to start with, and then you lose Jason Hatcher right out of the gate.
