Onside kick formation/technique question

What benefits does the Folk/Buehler thing have? Don't teams match up sides based on the number of players on each side? There was a time where you could fool teams by kicking to the lower numbered side but pretty sure teams have for a while now prepared both sides for a kick coming their way. Today I noticed that all it did was put Folk in a position to get the ball which is something, if you saw the play, he wanted to part of. As a kicker (not a man-beast like Buehler) I don't blame him.

Any idea on the benefits of having an onside kick formation like that though?

Some trickeration maybe?

It almost worked... mostly because Buehler hit a lousy kick and #39 didn't see it coming and it almost hit him in the back.

I like the thinking, but the execution was lousy.

It makes the receiving team pick a strong side, and then you kick to the other one (I think).

I would have liked to see Folk go right forward with it. He's not a small guy and Beuhler is a good athlete that the two of them might have had a chance to recover it.
