Dear Bill-
You came to our floundering team four years ago and reestablished hope in our franchise. You have upgraded the talent significantly, you have reached the playoffs (albeit without any kind of success) 2x. Now, with a year remaining on your contract- again- the will he stay or will he go question is upon us.
Before you decide either way, I would like for you to reflect on exactly what you personally deem as a successful run as a coach of an NFL franchise. We all know the answer Bill. If you are not competing for the World Championship of pro football... you are simply fielding a team. And that's what you've given us. A team... they have uniforms and numbers and the necessary equipment and a roster of the requisite 53 people.
Not a dangerous team. Not a really good team. Not a good team for that matter. We are three games in totality over .500 since you've arrived.
Bill- is this the best you can give us Cowboys fans? This is the best you can do? Is it true you need Belichek and Crennel and Henning and blah and blah and blah to be your gurus? Are you not a guru? Just a lucky guy who staffed properly?
That would make you a great HR rep. Maybe even a terrific store manager of Target. You'd definitely be able to make a staffworks schedule at a Dairy Queen and get the most scoops per hour of any franchise in Los Colinas. In fact, getting to your Jersey roots... I think Nathan's has a job for you staffing its Brunswick locations bright and talented young men slinging dogs and boardwalk fries. And they, too, might in their spare time be elite athletes and "good kids" like say, DeMarcus Ware or a Terence Newman.
What I'm getting at is: we hired you to turn this football team around. Not 360 degrees... Bill... 180. We need you to be the Parcells that noone wants to play in December. We want the coach of the team that dethroned the mighty 49ers and derailed the seemingly unstoppable K-Gun Buffalo Bills. We need the adaptable Coach Parcells that sometimes coaches to his talent and not his "preference".
Coach Parcells... you've forgotten more football than I or anyone that roots for the Cowboys will ever remember. And that's a good thing.
Here's something I do remember that you might reference if you wish I remember loathing your team as a kid. I hated the Giants. Hated them. We need to instill that kid of passion in our team that incites other teams to dread US again. I want people to say "yeesh here come the Cowboys and Parcells".
I don't want a team that folds like the one you field does. I dont' want a team that can't put pressure on the quarterback. I want a rough and ready Dallas Cowboys squad that hits and keeps hitting, fights and keeps fighting like your Giants squads did. I want a controlled offense like Simms ran to perfection. I want players that can catch the ball. I want a rugged tight end that rumbles through safeties... (I think we got one of these, btw...) I want corners that stick WR's and I want playmaking LB's (I think we have one of these also).
I want the Bill Parcells that CAN fix this. I want the Bill Parcells that demands excellence, and is not satisfied with a win. I want a guy that gives his soul to the team that he coaches and loves his players, but demands perfection. I want the Bill Parcells that can make a winner out of ANYONE with the desire to be a winner.
Where is that man Bill? That's the coach of the Dallas Cowboys. To find his final Super Bowl championship, he will have to find himself first. Would a quality architect or contractor walk away from a home or skyscraper he built that collapsed? Only if it was falling on him as he stood under it, Bill. Then after legal issues have been hammered out, he would FIX his mess- at a discount I am sure. Customer satisfaction issues- like the one I'm having Coach.
This house of cards is of your construction. It is your blueprint, it is your handiwork. It is your folly. You are the only person that can fix this thing. You owe it to yourself, to Jerry Jones, the Cowboys organization, the players that give their all for you (and the ones that don't? get rid them- any of them- plain and simple)... you owe it to me and the legions of fans that embraced a nemesis because we knew how good YOU were as a coach.
We need that Bill Parcells. The Cowboys organization needs that Bill Parcells. Tony Romo and the blindsided defense need that Bill Parcells. YOU need that Bill Parcells.
Don't leave without giving it your best shot. I don't know why, but I get the feeling we haven't seen that yet. You're a better coach than what the Cowboys have seen, but that doesn't mean you're not the best man for the job.
In my line of work, if we don't get the job done in the time scheduled... part of being responsible is to stay late and complete it. And that's what you need to do in this case. Finish what you start. You're not far as some think, but the Dallas Cowboys in the Parcells mold are definitely NOT a finished product at this time. What to do. I'll tell you.
I say you go into Jerry's office on Monday and offer to sign a three year deal, and you tell him you're going to fix the team and that's it. And then let's get on with it. All of us. Coaches, fans, players- everyone. You're the coach of these Dallas Cowboys. And you should be the one to fix my favorite team. Noone else.
Good luck Coach - I will be rooting for you.
Sincerely,
Mark from Baltimore, MD
