Dear Coach;

Preseason is winding down and you have only one more exhibition game to decide on the final roster in Big D. Injuries are always troubling, but you should have a pretty good idea what you are going to do. Don't worry that every ambulance chasing reporter in the world will second guess you. Welcome to the Cowboys.

You should be getting used to the media in Dallas by now. When Jerry Jones hired you, you were blasted as a defensive coach with limited offensive skills, selected soley to repair the late season meltdown that cost the Cowboys the division title. Your previous tenures were picked apart and ranked against the likes of Vince Lombardi as the standard for success. Some even said that Jerry had given up on the offense by not hiring Norv Turner, who we all know took what would have been your job in San Diego. Welcome to the Cowboys.

Let's not forget that little thing with the Offensive Coordinator's job. Jerry hired the guy to run the O before you were even named as the head coach. That is Jerry's style. He will do what he thinks is best for the team and if it bothers you, maybe you can join Jimmy on FOX. All the reporter talk was that Garrett was here to fill in for you once he got some experience and you failed. The fact that you handled it like a professional and have embraced Garrett with open arms does not dissapate the drama. Welcome to the Cowboys.

As soon as you got to Dallas, the questions started flying that you would not be able to control your star receiver. You were a nice guy, and everyone knows where nice guys finish. It was the pundits consensus that there would be a revolt in the locker room led by "the Player", and you wouldn't be able to control it because you don't maintain team discipline. Nevermind that he is happy. Nevermind that despite the troubles other teams stars are having, your team has been quiet and content. It must be because you are letting them get away with whatever they want. Welcome to the Cowboys.

During the draft, you were criticized for taking another DE/LB hybrid in the first round and for passing up on the likes of Brady Quinn. Never mind that 21 other teams passed on him, you were a doofus for doing so. Forget about the fact you have a young, all pro QB that lit the league up in his first season of play. You should have started over with a rookie. But I forget, you are just a defensive coach. And what were you thinking by taking a quarterback in the fourth round to play WR? An injured QB at that? Nevermind that he has freakish skills. Welcome to the Cowboys.

Training camp starts and your defensive leader is complaining to the reporters circling like buzzards that he is not appreciated and is being disrespected because you drafted someone to play his position after he suffered what was probably a career ending injury? How could you do this to good ol' Greg? When you responded that you did value him and were counting on him coming back and starting at OLB, everyone seocnd guessed the first round pick. Forget that Greg hasn't been on the field after the first half hour of the first practice, and his disconntent has been skillfully channeled into a nonissue, you are still evil for not giving him more money. Welcome to the Cowboys.

During your first preseason game your team outshined the World Champions. Big D was on its way to the Superbowl. Your offense unit looked polished and ready to go. The defense was disruptive. Automatically, the talk turned to a sixth Superbowl win. In comes a good Denver team. Your offense performs well and your defense is devastating. Opposing players and media pundits accuse you of game planning and breaking the unwritten rules of preseason. You blitzed too much and were too well prepared for Denver. Nevermind that they practiced for two days against the same scheme and same players, you treated them unfairly. Welcome to the Cowboys.

Your third preseason game was against arguably the worst franchise in football. You lost. Now the talk of Superbowl 6 has been replaced with bottom of the division, 6-10, world is crumbling talk. Never mind that you may have felt obligated to take it easy on the lessor oppoenent. Never mind that you didn't blitz like you did in the first two games. You are condemed for getting embarassed by a team that you should have beaten by 21 points. Nevermind the criticism you would have received if you had. Welcome to the Cowboys.

Now you are faced with cutting the roster down to 53 players. You know that everyone has an opinion. You have tough decisions to make. What is good for the team, not is what is good for the reporters, or the networks. You know that you are going to be second guessed. What if you have to cut a promising receiver that may have run a kickoff back in a playoff game? What if you have to cut a vetern kicker and take a shot with a rookie? What if you have to cut a veteren LB that just has not comeback from a serious injury and shows no promise of doing so? Right now, you have to make these decisions on what could arguably be the most scutinized stage in the NFL. Welcome to the Cowboys.

Let's see what happens this season. Let's just say that you have a good year, going 12-4, win the division title, but lose out in the Conference championship game. You will be considered as a failure because you didn't bring home the trophy. This franchise and its fans expect to win it all. Nothing less will be considered a success, no matter how the season turns out. Don't take it personal. It got to Jimmy, Barry, Chan, Dave and Big Bill. Only the immortal Tom Landry seemed to be able to stand up to the heat. Those are big shoes to fill.

Welcome to the Cowboys.

if winning it all is a sign of success then by that standard parcells is a huge failure.

there are some who'd argue that point.

Good read FD, I like that you've taken appropriate shots at fair-weather fans, and the media, that was awesome.

I have been leading the doomsayers. It is so fun to watch people overreact. I really believe that Wade was badgered into pulling his punch this last game. Besides, why show anymore than you have to. We practiced everything new against Denver.
