Opinion on taking R Saffold at 27?

For those who are interested in N Allen at 27, it seems that R Saffold could also go end of Round 1 early in Round 2. (I'm assuming that guys like E Thomas, Iupati, Wilson, Odrick are already gone.)

Saffold could play both OG, and he could also play LT, so he offers quite a bit of versatility - more so than a guy like C Brown, imo.

It doesn't appear the Cowboys have shown interest in him, but I thought I'd throw this out there. There seems to be a big decline in top tier OT talent once you past guys like Saffold and possibly Ducasse.

I'm not too well versed on the guy, but I do know that he only allowed three sacks for his career at Indiana. pretty good number. He also had a pretty fair amount of penalties last season, so he could instantly step in for Flo in that category! :laugh2:

I haven't seen the Cowboys associated with his name at all, other than a few mock drafts.

But I just wanted to throw his name out there simply because he can play both LT and OG. He'd probably go in the top 35-37 picks in any case, and it's obviously a position of need.

I have to admit, I've never seen him play. I'm basing my opinion on him on what I've read.

I would have no problem with Saffold. I would not want them to draft Ducasse in the 1st--I view him strictly as a guard. In the event Pouncy is there, I absolutely wouldn't want them to draft him. I think he lacks quickness and explosion (even for an inside guy).

There are a number of guys I would fine with, if they are there. Some of them:
Tackles: Davis, Saffold, Brown, Campbell (I think he could slide into round 2),
Guards: Jerry (I think he will be as good or better than the more heralded Iupati) or Iupati
WR: Bryant
LB: Pierre-Paul, Kindle
DE:Odrick
CB: McCourty, Ghee (I like him as much as McCourty--even though nobody else seems to)
S: Thomas
QB: Clausen (you never know), Tebow (I know it's not a need position, at least until about the 4th game of the season, by then Romo may have been dismembered--say your Free prayers)

I think Tebow has a decent chance to be a franchise QB in about 2 years. Plus I'm hearing more and more he may go in the first round.

2 guys that would bum me out totally are: Pouncy and Mays

For a bonus, here is a guy that may be available late in the 3rd or even 4th round: Daniel Te'o-Nesheim. I think he is as physically gifted as any pash rusher in the 1st round. And he is Washinton's all time sack leader. Great motor. Barring injury, I think he could be a star in the NFL. I know it's not a need position, but, y'know, best player available and all.

If we went for him I'd prefer it was while trading down.

thanks, that was a thorough response :)

with respect to pouncey, i thought his forte was his quickness in the interior . . . . the other lb i like is weatherspoon as an ilb in wade's 34.

This. Top of the second would be better. The fact he can play multiple positions including LT is a major plus.

top of the 2nd would be ideal, but assuming we can't get the trade we want to draft day . . . . and iupati, et, wilson, odrick, davis and campbell at ot, weatherspoon, and pouncey were gone . . . how would you feel?

let's say you're choosing between tate, mccourtney, price at that 27 spot, and saffold is also available.

I would order of preference 1) McCourtney 2) Tate 3) Saffold 4) Price

Yhea, me too :laugh2:

I'm just concerned the best way to develop depth at the LT spot.

If we don't land Saffold or Ducasse, maybe the team looks towards a guy like Fox or even T Washington towards rounds 4-7. Preferably though, the team needs a guy with versatility.

I think we need an OG as well as an OT to develop this Draft.

If your looking for the OT that will be the best to come out of this class 3 or 4 years down the road then it's a brilliant pick.

I wouldn't be upset about it,however, i want a saftey in the first. Then a OL in the second, poss, Mike Johnson.

Dude is a 3 year starter in the Big 10. Tested well too. I'd have no problem taking him at 27.

I can see your point... Big Ten tackles usually do well in the NFL.

Wouldnt be my first choice at 27, but wont complain either.
