I don’t understand the logistics of San Francisco. They have 3 fairly young QBs on the roster with lots of gas left in the tank. Cutting ties with Jimmy G would be easiest. Cutting ties with Trey Lance would be very difficult considering how much they invested in him. They likely wouldn’t get nearly the same back in a trade. And cutting ties with Brock Purdy would be very difficult, not so much financially, but considering his age, poise and success, especially if he brings them deep in the playoffs. Unless all those guys would be fine wasting a year of their careers to hold Brady’s notepad.
San Francisco makes a lot of sense. They don’t have to cut ties with anyone not named Garrapolo. They’re just going to have to be backups.
The goal is to win a Super Bowl, Tom Brady as the QB of that team makes them a juggernaut. Who cares if Lance doesn’t pan out if they win one. I know they invested a lot of capital in him, but he’s coming off a bad injury and yet another year of not playing.
This makes it 3 years in a row where he hasn’t played major snaps, he will not be able to play at a level consistently high enough to take advantage of that roster. He’s too raw. If he learns behind Brady for a year or two it may salvage the pick. The Purdy story is nice, but he’s a rookie and can compete with Lance after Brady retires. He doesn’t have enough weight to steer you from signing Tom freakin Brady.
Now if they feel like the tape says he’s washed that’s one thing. But if he’s still Tom Brady of the last 2/3 years you don’t even think about it. Trey Lance and Brock Purdy should absolutely not stop a franchise from getting a Hall of Fame QB. Shouldn’t even be a thought.
