I like the pendant you picked out. Not too little of money spent and not too much spent on jewelry just yet. I'd say that's a good in between. Just remember to keep an eye on the chain so that you don't lose the pendant if it breaks. I would get a stronger chain in the near future as long as it fits the loop.

Had to put all of these on Facebook. Thirty seconds after the upload, a friend put this:

omg - an ex gave me that necklace for Valentines one year. I pretended I liked it and even wore it quite a bit. When we broke up, I traded that ugly sucker for some diamond earrings. Had to add quite a bit for the earrings, but totally worth it!

The story they tell about it is cute, but a pebble might symbolize as much (if not more) between you and a person you care for.
