Talking to a fellow Cowboys fan, we were discussing what needs to happen for the Cowboys to win Sunday. We both agreed the Cowboys need to start off fast. That got me to thinking about what would be the best scenario for the Cowboys to start the game against the Pats. Would it be:

A) Cowboys get the ball first and score on the opening drive,

or

B) Pats get the ball first around the 20 yd line and go three and out.

and conversly, what would be worst scenario

A) Cowboys get the ball first and go three out

or

B) Pats get the ball and drive the length of the field for a TD

What are your thoughts?

Myself I like losing the coin toss because I like being on defense 1st. Main reason is you get the ball to start the 2nd half so if you are behind you have a chance to catch up and if your ahead you have a chance to extend the lead. I also think being on defense 1st when the emotions of the game are at it's highest it tends to benifet the defensive team.

normally, I like to lose the coin toss as well, for the same reasons you point out. However, for this game I think I would prefer to get the ball first (provided we can score a TD on the opening drive). I think scoring a TD first would get the slow-start monkey off our back and will set the offensive tone for the rest of the game.

I also tend to agree that emotions at the beginning of the game benefits the defense as well. The Crowd knows they are supposed to be loud for the defense and will be pumped early on, However, I think Romo's play is going to be in the back of everyones mind going into this game. If he can start the game strong it will give everyone the confidence that we can hang with them and the defense will do its part to slow the Pats down.

I still would rather be on defense for the simple fact noone ever won a game in the 1st qrt. coming out in the second half I just like having the ball for the reasons I stated.

B) Pats get the ball first around the 20 yd line and go three and out.

Stop them cold to give the defense confidence. Offense then march the ball down and score a TD. This way we also get the ball first at 3rd quarter.

what would be worst scenario

A) Cowboys get the ball first and go three out

Same reason as above. Three and out first serious will energize the Pats' defense and if Pats score immediately, the stadium will be very quite and Pats will get the ball first in 3rd quarter.

Come on. Best case NE gets the ball and Dallas picks off Brady to set up a TD. :)

I like that but I was just going by scenarios presented by the thread starter. :p:

It does not matter to me when we get the ball on offense or when the defense takes the field.

The adrenalin will be flowing, regardless, so if plays are going to be made they wil be made regardless of when the defense or the offense hits the field.

I have predicted since, the official schedule came out, that the Pats would lose this game, I stand by that now even more after Monday night's game.

In my opinion only very very good/great teams over come 6 turnovers in a game and win. When a team commits that many turnovers in a game that normally is an L, no matter how bad the other team is.

I don't think the opening drives for either team is gonna have much of a bearing on who wins or doesn't win.

We could go 3 and out and give up a TD on the Pats' first drive and still win, and vice versa.

To win we need to play mistake free football on offense and pressure Brady early and often on defense.

Count me in also...

The Patriots have had it easy...and some people think the Cowboys have had it easy so far...but not this coming Sunday! The Patriots are going to be in a damn fight just to get a win...no more "let's just show up because we are the Patriots" crap!

It is not like we are the 80 Saints facing the 85 Bears. I think people are over-dramatizing the matchup this week. This is not an all-time mismatch game. NE is very good and Dallas is pretty good as well.

Part of the problem with our slow starts has been bad field position. The opponent starts out with the ball and is able to move it enough to pin us down inside the 20 on the punt. In this game, I think I want the ball first and even if we do not score at least move the ball enough to get an edge in field position.

Worst case Romo throws a pick on the 1st drive. We have to get Brady out of his comfort zone back there which most have not done. Cinci had some opportunities downfield in that Monday night game a few weeks ago, but Palmer was way off. No way they should be able to run it on us to set up any play action. Hopefully, Romo checks down to RB's when he needs to, and doesn't lock onto Whitten in the red zone. Would like for Fasano and Crayton to play a part after we get TO some early touches.

Romo didn't throw those int's cuz he was "out of his comfort zone". He just had a horrible game. The pass blocking was solid (for the most part).

I think Brady will struggle his first time to Texas Stadium.

In years past, I think I recall stories about how the Texas turf is just one big hump and standing between the hashmarks was a higher elevation than near the sidelines.

If my memory serves me correctly, it took QBs new to the stadium a couple series to stop throwing too high or low to receivers because the QB was actually throwing downhill to receivers on the outside.

Can anyone coroborate?

That giant hump is no longer there. It was "evened out" a bit when they put in the new surface.
