I have been reading a lot of discussion regarding the struggles of the OL in regards to the running game. My theory is that the struggles against NO & Minn. are due in some part to the heavy 8 man fronts and consistent run-blitzing that NO and Minn. employed against Dallas. In the case of NO, the saints opened with 7 man fronts early in the first quarter then switched to 8 after the 1st drive, therefore I can understand their strategy.
Minnesota puzzles me a little bit. Minnesota has a fairly good interior line, and If I were the Minnesota coach I would think you would keep 7 in the box in order to evaluate the interior line not stack the line of scrimmage. I realize Dallas has the 2 tight end formation and ran at a high % on 1st down, but I would have thought they would have stayed in more of a base defense for evaluation purposes. Although the game was a tie, they allowed a substantial number of yards in the air. I guess I am just curious as to what Minnesota was trying to accomplish in their evaluations.
