Opportunity for young guys!I say rest Ellis and Glenn, and maybe even Newman 6 weeks.

That is why I hate pre-season. You basically know 50 of the 53 guys you want on your squad and by the time it's over, every team still doesn't know if their backups can completely fill in for their starters anway. So what's the use. I know that's a very general statement, but sheesh.

If Ellis needs more time for strength and flexibility (or mental confidence, which probably is the big thing for old Mr. Worry Wart) then FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, we have TWO, not one, TWO 1st Round picks that need to learn how to be not only starters but good players for this team. So play them. I'd give Spencer 2/3rds of Ellis's snaps and Carpenter the other 1/3. Carpenter might not have the talent but he would be a great all around LB backup and Nickel player. Let him learn both inside and outside and contribute that way.
Spencer should have the talent to learn by Trial by Fire so throw him to the wolves. If Ellis is better in 6 weeks then let him come back healthy.

Same for Terry Glenn. We have Crayton in a contract year no? Let him show what he's got. Hurd needs to step up, but, I'm sorry you can't tell enough in pre-season, bubble guys playing bubble guys. This is an opportunity to learn something about our backups. These are our future or not. Lets find out. If Austin has the wheels he's supposed to, put him in for a play or two as well. He's on gameday rosters anyway. I think Phillips will do this where Parcells was reluctant to play young guys and rookies. Frankly I think this hurt Carpenter. Sheesh, I thought Carpenter really came on last 2 games of last year. Give people a chance.

Newman, is tougher because he's less replaceable. He's a star, and should have been in probowl. But, don't we need to see if Reeves and/or Jones can do it as starters for at least 3 or 4 games stretches at least or as the 3rd or 4th db playing fairly regularly. These are guys entering 4th (or is it 3rd) season. Time to find out. If not we know we need to get a Free Agent or draft a corner or two and probably early anyway. Remember Newman isn't all that young. He came out pretty late. We'll need a talented young corner sooner than later. The same arguement that has been made about WR the last couple of years.

I think this is an opportunity early in the year to develop these young guys or guys that need to prove they are Playoff team calibre players. Dallas isn't a team trying to weather the salary cap and poor draft position anymore. If the players aren't gonna cut it, we need to upgrade. We have cap space and 2 1st rounders next year. Lets find out about the guys we have while not putting injured guys at risk by bringing them back too early out of desperation. Too early to be desperate and there could be many benefits to playing the younger guys anyway. Development and finding out if they can play against starters not being the least.

I think this is a good post... especially re: Ellis and Glenn because they're old and brittle ;)

But Newman's injury is such that he should be able to play with it without putting himself too much at risk.

I think most would agree whoever gives us the best chance to win must play if possible.I am tired of losing and I am sure they are too.Newman will be out there.I think Ellis is done period.Glenn will probably be back by mid season if not then hes done for career.

The worst thing that happens to newman if he plays is he rips it completely

But if he rips it completely they say that is better than a partial since its a useless tendon and the pain will stop

The goal for 2007 is to win the Super Bowl.

It was not to let young, developing players who may not be fully ready to handle a big workload, handle a big workload. So while you're right in that there could be some benefits from our young guys being forced onto the field, there is zero doubt that these injuries are detrimental to our goal, which is bringing home Lombardi #6.

Good post, anyways. I'm still amped for the season and I still think we have a shot at reaching the pinnacle. Hopefully Newman can fight through and give us at least 90% of himself, while Spencer and Crayton will have to do at least a decent job of filling the void.

The goal for every NFL team every year is to win the SB. But I certainly don't want to see Jerry make some stupid trade that provides short term assistance but long-term disaster. In other words I don't want to trade some of next years' draft picks for a so so WR. Now for a CB that is something else but even then I'm inclined to stick with what we have until we really see what we have.

I agree that winning the SuperBowl is the goal. I might argue that Newman at 70% may or may not be better than Reeves at 100%. Now if playing Newman at 70% for 3 weeks means that he will end up being 70% all year instead of resting him 6 games and being 95% for last 10 games and maybe the playoffs that is another thing. Also, you then know if Reeves can play and/or Reeves is that much better because he's been a starter for awhile. Players can reinjure themselves or suffer an entirely different injury. We cut Aaron Glenn.......so then Reeves is going to play. Lets give him a chance if Newman benefits and can be better in long run.

Under Parcells we had the Glenns, Rivera's and Fabini's and Singleton's etc etc on the team to "WIN NOW" but they didn't win either, to the detriment of the development of McQuistans and Carpenters etc. It's a balancing act.

The development of younger players, or finding out if players are gonna be capable of going against starters is helpful to winning now and maybe even more helpful to winning in playoffs. It also finally forces the team to realize who is good enough or who isn't in the young guy department something I feel, in hindsight, this team has stuggled with for a number of years now. We still don't know if Canty, Spears, Hurd, Crayton, Fasano, Hatcher, Raitliff, Jones, Reeves, Carpenter, Burnett, and even Brady James, are all that or not. They are entering the stage of their careers where if they aren't we ain't gonna win the Superbowl anyway.

If the young guys stink then we know something and then you can rush the injured veteran back in, but lets give these guys a chance. Some are high draft picks and some have shown real flashes.

I realize we need to win to make playoffs, but it's the war not 1 battle that is the goal. Young doesn't always mean worse especially when compared to proven/veteran but injured.

I do hear your point and agree, just thought I'd add to my initial point.

Wouldn't that require an invasive surgery - and what would be the timetable for the wound to heal? I mean, we can't have our corners running around with holes in their feet. I get embarrased for them when they have holes in their socks - much less their feet fer crissake.
