Options at slot corner

I agree Mukuamu makes for a better option in the slot.

Right. The responsibilities there better fit what he can do than outside corner responsibilities. It had me shaking my head in the preseason when we had him playing outside at corner. We should have been giving him slot work.

As of right now they have Israel Mukuamu and Juanyeh Thomas. They could have one of these young guys win the job. They also could move Bland inside and put someone else outside. They could draft another corner or sign a free agent to play outside.

They could sign Mike Hilton to play the slot. Maybe his price comes down a bit. Remember that Jourdan Lewis got 10 million a year.

They could draft Jihaad Barron to play the slot. He's a good player, but would be a 1st round pick.

A lot of different options, but they need to add to the cornerback room.

why would we want to do that (move Bland inside and a lesser CB play outside) ..when Bland set the NFL record for pick 6's once he was moved to outside. ?

I'm keeping my strengths outside with Bland & Diggs, while i find my JLewis replacement elsewhere. - be that Carson, Butler, Hall , a street vet .or a regarded draft pick..

Not in tight man coverage, maybe peehaps in zone, off ball on the outside, where his height and length would be more of an advantage.

When Izzy was asked to play slot, I thought he was too leggy and gangly to handle the slot vs smaller, quicker slot WRs.
Those stop & restart double moves would eat him alive, if he had to resort to full time slot., imo. .

Move Calen Carson to slot. See if Pride Jr. can play slot. There guys in FA, but check in house first.

I feel you can add josh Butler to this mix too. But I agree.

Isn't Hilton always hurt ?

Samuel Jr. only played 4 games last year, but i'd take a go with him in the slot full time, depending upon his price. Maybe he still thinks he is a outside starter ?

Barron from Texas is kind of like Branch from the Lions, Swiss army knive type of player, can play inside/outside and safety. Problem is, think Cowboys get scared off with his lack of length

He can't play outside corner. He gets toasted by start and stop movements down the field. The advantage of playing in the slot is the tight quarters. He can use his length to get handsy and he doesn't have to turn and run as much, stop and try to regroup and run again. That's where it gets tough for him. He can't regroup and burst. He can carry and redirect over a short area or break out of his zone stance and use his length. Double-moves on the outside will beat him ever time because he has to gather after stopping on the move.

This is why he played well in the slot in the playoffs a couple of years ago.

According to PFF, Mukuamu - who at 6-4 towers over the smallish Lewis - played more often in the slot last season with 92 snaps at nickel and only 41 on the perimeter.

Of course, the way we went through corners, I think he had to step in for Lewis at one point.

Mukuamu did well in the slot in the playoffs because he has length. It makes it hard to escape from him for quick throws underneath. Where he struggles in on the outside because he doesn't have the footwork/cutting ability to stay with receivers out of their breaks down the field. When he can sit and break on the ball instead of having to gather, he can use his length to break up passes.

I’m betting bland is in slot. He’s really good in the slot. Hopefully Diggs is back quicker than projected though I don’t expect him to be 100% this year at all. Even when well it takes players time to get to 100% in their plsy

Thomas is S not a corner..but Carson and possibly Elam.. would be first choice bland outside with butler when they return but AO and Muk may get shot somewhere.

This conundrum is exactly why I have put corner as a possible sleeper at #12 could be the kid from Michigan, Will or Barron at 44.. The injuries to Butler and diggs and Lewis being gone makes this a priority but at #12 is that BPA is that a reach and will Baron make it to 44?

I think post draft they'll add someone like Gilmor, Awuzie or a vet presence for sure. Good things real games don't start till September they have over five months to get this figured out....

I could see that when Diggs returns, but until then, it may be better to play Mukuamu in the slot because he's OK there and a liability at outside corner. Right now based on who we've got, I'd say Elam and Bland at the outside spots and Mukuamu in the slot. I am interested in seeing how Butler and Carson progress, though.

However, it may be a moot point after the draft.
