Oregon's Masoli could be the next entry into the supplemental draft
Posted by Mike Florio on June 20, 2010 3:17 PM ET
Last week, we were the first to report (I smell a Pulitzer) the three names of the men who'll enter the July supplemental draft: Harvey Unga, Vaness Emakpoe, and Joshua Price-Brent.

The pool could expand to four, according to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. The next man in could be Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli.

Dismissed by the Ducks on June 9, Masoli reportedly is weighing his options. With one year of eligibility remaining, Masoli could opt for a transfer instead.

In March, Masoli received a sentence of 12 months' probation after pleading guilty to the January 24 burglary of two laptops computers and a guitar.

EUGENE – Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and wide receiver Garrett Embry entered guilty pleas Friday in Lane County Circuit Court to charges of burglary in connection with Jan. 24 thefts from a Eugene fraternity house.

Share According to the court judgment document, each conviction "will be treated as a misdemeanor at this time." Under Oregon law, second-degree burglary is a Class C felony. It's not clear what the court document means for the players' criminal records, or for any punishment coach Chip Kelly might give Masoli.

Both Masoli and Embry will get 12 months probation, be ordered to serve 140 hours of community service within eight months and owe $5,200 in shared restitution in 10 days plus a $100 bench-probation fee. They are to report to jail within three weeks for community service. They also have been ordered to have no contact with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

» James pleads guilty to physical harassment, gets 24 months' probationFriday’s hearing continued a disastrous stretch for the Oregon football team, which has seen nine players run into public trouble in the past seven weeks.

On Friday morning in the same courtroom, Oregon running back LaMichael James pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment in connection with a Feb. 16 domestic dispute. He will serve 24 months probation and 10 days in custody, including credit for two days he has served in jail.

Due to jail overcrowding, James probably will serve on a work crew or do community service to fulfill the other eight days, said Alex Gardner, Lane County district attorney.

The hearings are big news in college football; Masoli and James started in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day and the two best players on a 10-3 Ducks team that expects to return most of its starters for 2010. By 8 a.m. Friday, several large TV trucks were camped outside the courthouse and camera crews for stations from Eugene to ESPN set up on the third floor.

As of early Friday afternoon, Oregon officials had not announced how or whether they will punish James, 20, or Masoli, 21. Kelly is to address the matter at 3 p.m., and he already has kicked three players off the team, including Embry, 20, and suspended one for a year. Another player left on his own.

Oregon’s run of player transgressions began Jan. 24, when members of a Eugene fraternity filed a police report accusing Masoli and Embry of stealing two laptop computers and a guitar from their house. Embry has since been kicked off the team.

On the night of the alleged theft, Oregon kickers Rob Beard and Mike Bowlin were injured in an unrelated brawl. Beard was charged with assaulting a woman, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of physical harassment and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service. Beard remains on the team, but Bowlin has since left it.

Defensive end Matt Simms was charged with assault in an alleged Jan. 30 retaliation and was kicked off the team.

On Feb. 20 -- 14 hours after Kelly held a news conference to condemn the players’ behavior -- linebacker Kiko Alonso was cited for DUII and Kelly suspended him for the 2010 season. Shortly afterward receiver Jamere Holland posted a Facebook message blasting Kelly for the punishment, and Kelly kicked Holland off the team.

Last Saturday linebacker Josh Kaddu, 19, was cited for being a minor in possession of alcohol.

Meanwhile, officials required James to wear an electronic-monitoring bracelet and stay away from his alleged victim, meaning he couldn’t attend class. James no longer wears the bracelet and apparently will be able to resume academic activities.

James and two men with him, apparently lawyers, exited the courtroom opposite the main entrance and did not speak with reporters.

Draft Scout Jeremiah Masoli News
06/16/10 - A lawyer for former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has notified a court in writing of his client’s not guilty pleas to three noncriminal citations. Eugene lawyer Dan Koenig said Tuesday he sent the notice of Masoli’s not guilty pleas last week. Masoli was cited June 7 for possessing less than an ounce of marijuana, driving with a suspended license and failing to stop when entering a roadway. No trial date has been set. Masoli pleaded guilty in a January theft at a fraternity house and was suspended for the entire upcoming season by Oregon coach Chip Kelly. Masoli was kicked off the team last Wednesday. The university said he was dropped because he didn’t “adhere to obligations” outlined by Kelly. - AP Sports

06/09/10 - Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who led the University of Oregon football team to the Rose Bowl in January, was kicked off the team today — two days after a Springfield police officer stopped his vehicle and cited him on charges of possessing less than one ounce of marijuana, driving with a suspended license and failure to stop at a driveway or a sidewalk. UO athletic department officials announced Masoli’s dismissal this morning. Ducks head coach Chip Kelly suspended Masoli, 21, for the upcoming season after the quarterback pleaded guilty in Lane County Circuit Court in March to burglarizing a campus fraternity house in January. Masoli is scheduled to appear in Springfield Municipal Court on June 24, a court spokeswoman said. All three charges stemming from Monday’s traffic stop in Springfield are non-criminal violations. - Jack Moran, The Register-Guard

06/09/10 - The University of Oregon says quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has been dismissed from the football team because of a “failure to adhere to obligations” outlined by coach Chip Kelly. Kelly had already suspended Masoli for the entire 2010 season after the QB pleaded guilty to burglary for his role in the theft of laptops from an Oregon fraternity. Masoli, who led the Ducks to the Rose Bowl last season, has one year of eligibility remaining. Kelly declined to comment. - AP Sports

03/30/10 - Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is participating in spring practice at Oregon even though he won’t play a down for the Ducks this fall after his season-long suspension. Masoli pleaded guilty March 12 to a misdemeanor burglary charge involving a theft at a campus fraternity house in late January. He was suspended by coach Chip Kelly within hours of his court appearance. Masoli, touted as a possible Heisman candidate his senior season, is allowed to practice with the team during the suspension. There has been speculation that Masoli will transfer. But he was present on Tuesday when the Ducks opened spring workouts—with Nate Costa taking the initial snaps at quarterback. - AP Sports

03/29/10 - It remains unclear what his role will be this spring, but suspended Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli will remain in school at Oregon, the Eugene Register-Guard and The Oregonian reported. Masoli, who met with coach Chip Kelly on Monday morning, was suspended for the 2010 season after pleading guilty to second-degree burglary on March 12. When Kelly announced Masoli's suspension, he left open the option for Masoli to return to the team in 2011. With Masoli - a potential Heisman Trophy candidate before his suspension - out, senior Nate Costa and sophomore Darron Thomas will compete for the starting quarterback job this spring. - Ted Miller, ESPN

Jeremiah Masoli is back in hot water. The former star quarterback for the Oregon Ducks has been kicked off the football team by head coach Chip Kelly. This coming after multiple charges were filed against Masoli on Monday night after a traffic stop for failing to stop at a sidewalk or driveway led to possession of marijuana and driving with a suspended license.

Masoli had already been suspended from the team for the entire 2010 season after he had pleaded guilty to a burglary charge from a January 2010 incident. Now the team has said that Masoli has been dismissed from the team for “for a failure to adhere to obligations previously outlined by head football coach Chip Kelly.”
Masoli, who once had a bright future ahead of him, will now have to come to the realization that football as a career is almost over. His teammate LaGarette Blount made a mistake, took his punishment like a man and returned to the team. He even got drafted into the NFL in this year’s draft, despite his poor judgment. The point I’m making is that when you make a mistake, you take the punishment and keep yourself out of trouble. Why on earth would you get behind the wheel, save for an emergency, when your license is suspended? Furthermore, why would you get into a car while having drugs when you know you are a high profile person?

Jeremiah meet Maurice, Maurice meet Jeremiah. These two a
thletes have no one on this planet to blame for their downfalls except for themselves. Both had an enormous amount of talent but lacked the proper amount of prowess between the ears. Hopefully Masoli can straighten his path before it gets the best of him. Clarett is the living embodiment of how things in your life can spiral out of control if you do not get a grasp and get on the straight and narrow.

Clarett, Ohio’s favorite athlete to hate, was similarly suspended for the 2003 season after he made the stupid decision to accept a car from a local dealership, then make false claims of stolen property from said car in the amount of $10,000. Hello insurance fraud. Clarett did not cooperate with investigators but eventually plead guilty to a lesser charge of failure to aid a law enforcement official. After learning that he would not be playing football for a year, he tried, along with Mike Williams from USC, to challenge the NFL’s rule of being 3 years removed from High School in order to enter the draft. The result was not in their favor and they were barred from the 2004 NFL Draft. Unfortunately they had both taken on agents before learning they had lost the battle. Therefore the NCAA revoked their eligibility to return to their respective schools to play football.

Mo was never the same after that. He did get drafted in 2005 with the last pick in the 3rd round to the Denver Broncos, but after signing one of the biggest bonehead contracts (READ: Incentive based) in recent memory and his lack of discipline and plethora of disrespect, he was cut in August without even having played a preseason game or making much money. Things continued to spiral downward for him after that. In 2006, An aggravated robbery charge followed by a carrying of a concealed weapon without a permit charge. He got the latter charge after being pulled over and found to have an AK-47, a Katana and a bottle of Grey Goose Vodka in his car. Clarett was sentenced to 7 and a half years in jail. He was released to a halfway house in April of this year.

The good news is that Masoli is only 21 years old and with hard work and dedication for the next year, he has the opportunity to train for the NFL Combine. If he can get himself into football shape, assuming he is out of it at this time, he has a shot of at least being signed as a free agent if not getting picked up in the later rounds. If he can keep focused and stay away from the “friends” he has surrounded himself with in Oregon, I think the kid still has a shot at making something of himself.
