Troy Aikman said a complete organization overhaul is needed because Jerry does not know how to build a Super Bowl team or that can contend for a Championship on a consistent basis.
Here is how I would overhaul the Cowboys organization from Jonesboys back to Cowboys:
Because Jerry Jones knows how to make money, but does not know how to make money and have a Super Bowl contending team every year, how would you end the 23 year Super Bowl drought and mediocrity of the Dallas Jonesboys to get back to the Dallas Cowboys?
Of course none of the above will happen in the real Jerry Jones World. Maybe, on our Fantasy Island.
Here is how I would overhaul the Cowboys organization from Jonesboys back to Cowboys:
- I would fire Jason Garrett and Scott Linehan NOW!!!!! Until the season is over, hire Mike Martz to be the OC . Martz is from the Norv Turner coaching tree. Martz, Hauck, Brown, and most of the offensive staff know each other, should survive the year, and Mike Martz would be a good coach and mentor of Dak Prescott who is been shell shocked by a stupid coaching. Martz is responsible of making low round draft picks and UDFA QBs into NFL starters and 1 NFL Hall of Famer.
- I would name Gary Brown or Will McClay (coached Jones's Desperadoes) interim HC. This satisfies the Rooney rule to interview them for the HC and allows me to search for a HC.
- I will keep the Defensive staff as is with Kris Richard and tell the next head coach he comes with the package. When you hear who I will name as the next Cowboys HC, that will be no problem.
- After and exhausting Cowboys HC search, I would name Will McClay, General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys. If you do not, he is going to get that offer from someone else and leave to GM another NFL team. This would also take the heat off me for evading the Rooney Rule by promoting Will McClay to get the HC I want.
- Will McClay, GM of the Dallas Cowboys will hire Washington University Head Coach Chris Petersen as Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys. This way I give all those ex Boise State football players on the Cowboys roster a coach they can play hard for and a coach that can actually coach. Because he is an offensive minded coach, he will develop Dak, develop his new OC Kellen Moore his former All American QB, and coming from the Washington area he knows and respects Kris Richard so it is no problem keeping him as DC. However, Richard would have to learn the Chris Petersen way of Coaching which is very Tom Landry like in style. But, because of no.6 below, that will not be problem.
- With Kris Richards as DC, I would allow Marinelli to stay as DL coach (however, his replacement is already on the staff, Leon Lett). But I would bring in both Dennis Thurman and Mike Singletary as assistant coaches. Thurman is a ex Cowboy, familiar with the Tom Landry/Chris Petersen style of coaching, former DC, who both coached and mentors Kris Richard. Thurman will be new seconday coach and assume the role that Marinelli has to Kris Richard now. Mike Singletary will be the LB coach. After 2019, you are going to lose Kris Richards to be a HC somewhere. So now, you have 2 coaches on the staff that can immediately take over as the new DC. If Lovie Smith is fired from Illinois as HC, I would hire Lovie Smith in the Marinelli role as LB coach to work with Dennis Thurman. All these coaches are predominantly 4-3 defensive coaches. However, Thurman is the must hire as he can assist with defensive scheme changes having ties to Tom Landry and Phil Carroll 4-3 defenses, and Buddy Ryan's twin son's Rob and Rex 46 and 3-4 defenses.
- Now that I have taken Jerry Jones from the GM role giving it to a man he likes, admires, and will still feel in GM control but not GM duties, McClay is a man that Jerry listens too that knows football. Since Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones has not had that football personnel person and talent evaluation guru directly running the franchise. Will McClay will solve that problem and allows Stephen Jones to stay as VP of the Dallas Cowboys eventually replacing Jerry Jones. This also will keep Stephen Jones from making the same Owner, President, General Manager, and Head Coach mistake prone mismanagement of his father. The Cowboys will have a permanent GM role occupied by someone not from the seed and generations of Jerral Wayne Jones.
Because Jerry Jones knows how to make money, but does not know how to make money and have a Super Bowl contending team every year, how would you end the 23 year Super Bowl drought and mediocrity of the Dallas Jonesboys to get back to the Dallas Cowboys?
