Twitter: Osa contract details

Im guessing Micah signs in the next couple weeks. They have already started negotiations and signing him frees money
That would be great. He is under his 5th year team option.

Two years with a lot of roster certainty would be a nice change.

You have Smith coming down the pipe the year after Parsons is due but after that it does not look like Mazi or Guyton will require similar attention. Bland is it and I suspect Diggs will be gone by then.

Pushing the cap hits to after that latter timeframe as they appear to be doing here makes sense.

How does Jerry and Stephen re-signing one of their own players give us any hope in free agency? If anything, it gives them less money to spend. This is a 'running in place' move. The Dallas Cowboys didn't get any better today.
Because it cost them around $6m this year instead of $25m. It should have never been a question if OSA would be brought back once Eberflus become DC. Just because you had a bad defense a season ago doesnt mean every player on the roster was horrible. I'm not cutting Micah Parsons just because he was part of a bad defense. I wont say Overshown had a bad year just because he was on a bad defense. They need to fix the real issues with the unit, not lose the few quality players they have.

I get you think OSA is a JAG, but thats a horrible take with minimal evidence. The worst thing about OSA is that Jerry refused to even try to bring in depth at the DT position until camp already started. OSA played the 12th most run snaps of any interior player in the league. That is not utilizing the guy for his strengths, thats like brining in Turpin all game to run block and then wondering why he had a bad game and you couldnt move the football. He draws attention from the offense and gets to the QB at some of the highest rates in the league. Blame Jerry for trying to patch together the rest of the defense, not OSA because he isnt perfect.

I agree with you AC that the Cowboys didn’t get a lot better but they also didn’t get worse by letting a decent DT sign with Washington or another rival.

Osa Odighizhua is a good, not great player. We need good players. But like you said we need more. I will believe we are better when the lazy FO PROVES they can sign some other good players in FA that aren’t their own.

Come on, you have got to be smarter than that.
His whole schtick is to be sarcastic about everything. He may hate Dak, now Osa, or any of the others over the years.

You will not be able to get him to discuss the details of his claims and positions from either entendre.

Most of the time it is self-evident nonsense. Certainly is consistent with artifice.

I've got 4.5 sacks for a DT whose only skill is pass rush. He sucks against the run. Thats not "minimal evidence". He didn't earn a new contract this size.

We should trade Parsons for draft picks. I'm very consistent in regard to how much I hate this defense and its personnel. No coach is going to walk in here and make this pig look good.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mazi winds up the new Marcus Spears. A former 1st that you keep as a role player. As an OT, there isnt much middle ground with Guyton

I think the plan is to get Parsons under extended before FA starts. Supposedly doing that with Lamb and Prescott restructures gets you close to 100m in cap space. Osa's extension doesn't really dent that since its what, 6m this year? Negotiations on a contract of Parsons scale are never a sure thing though

Well then you're clueless.

You'd be hard pressed to get less bang for your buck than to pay Osa Odighizuwa 20 million a year.

It is a complete waste of money. He gives you nothing but mediocrity. In actual production and not feelings.
This is 100% feelings and has nothing to do with production. You get aroused looking at sack totals and cant see the bigger picture so you hate OSA because he doesnt deliver the one stat you want to see. Its like looking at Daks yardage totals and saying hes an elite QB. We actually have tools to evaluate players beyond just counting stats, but you're stuck in 1994 on this one. Pressures count for something. Hitting the QB counts for something. Drawing double teams counts for something.

My view is that this unit needed to get blown up not re-signed for more money. Osa is not a building block. He's a JAG who had a career high 4.5 sacks last year. Now he's one of the top 10 paid DTs.

We aren't catching Washington or Philly next year regardless of where Osa signed. This off season should have been about building back the defense by offloading overpaid veterans and getting some new blood in here........maybe get some veterans with playoff experience like Washington did last year signing Ertz and Bobby Wagner. Re -signing our own guys for more money has never worked b/c the team is never as good as Jerry thinks it is.

I’m somewhat glad to see the Odighizhua signed and the contract as constructed appears to have some good plug ins for an early out if needed, void years, bonus money, etc. They still need a lot more on the DL to be a decent run stopping D.

I can only hope the Jones boys learned something from the disaster they created last year by sitting on their hands during the critical off-season months.

Maybe they will keep doing pro-active moves so they can clear cap space for some other roster overhauls. Because this team still has a loooooong way to go to get better. But this is a good step.

Like everything these guys do, I will believe something is good literally when it happens. Not before.
This was obviously the 1st step. Fisher was right the whole time.

I wouldn't have signed him but the structure isn't the worst.

But he also needs help. This better not be the big signing/draft pick at DT. I fear it will be.
First sentence perfectly sums up me as well...
I wouldn't have signed him but the structure isn't the worst.

Spot on.

That’s been a big part of the problem Coogy…

They push money down the road but don’t use the cap space toward trying to get better.

Why put yourself in that spot if you’re not going to even attempt to take advantage?
My name is Coogi change the y to an i

Nothing here is scary at all. If there is a void year they can kick money into they should be able to manipulate the cap number as much as they need.

Also "$13m of the ’27 base is guaranteed for injury and becomes fully guaranteed on 5th day of ’27 league year" is very nice to hear. A lot of the time that guaranteed money kicks in if the player is on the roster a year in advance. It should mean they would have an out on his deal after year two for a fairly small cap hit if they dont restructure him.

I'm yet to see anything to suggest this isnt a very team friendly deal, and it shouldn't stop them from making other moves.

As much as I enjoy bashing Jerry/Stephen for dumb contracts I cant really do that here. This actually gives me some optimism for the start of free agency...lets see if they let me down.
Thank you so much man really appreciate you

I agree this defense has a TON of work to do, and I'm not against trading Parsons either to get a haul in return. If they wanted to go the tear down route I wouldnt bash the front office at all, but its also clear they arent going that route. Part of me wishes they would blow up both sides of the football, but I get that isnt happening.

This is basically the same contract Ed Oliver signed when he was racking up 3 sacks a year. Why dont we call out Jalen Carter for only getting 4 sacks this year? OSA averages pressure in 3.02 seconds. Hes a quarter second slower than Micah Parsons. His average time to sack is rigth around 4.5 seconds which is right in line or better than many of the better interior rushers who are racking up sacks. Dexter Lawrence racked up 9 sacks this year with an average time of 4.96 seconds. Leonard Williams had 11 sacks this year at 4.55 seconds. Cam Hayward had 8 sacks at 5.14 seconds.

I think we fail to realize that sacks are somewhat random and heavily a team stat. Many of these guys racking up sacks are doing so because they have great coverage on the back end giving them that extra second. Some guys are rackup up sacks because they several players in the front 7 who can threaten a defense and demand attention. The Cowboys really have two....Osa and Micah.

That's the advantage of the long-term deal, at least we get him for cheap for this year.
Overall the deal is cheap. Every projection was over 20 mil. And while he doesn’t get big sack numbers he is an impactful pass rusher. We need to add another DT in the draft too. Nice thing about this being 4 years, if you get a stud you won’t be paying him big money till this deal is over

Yes and no. Osa could have gone elsewhere and cost nothing but that was never going to happen.

He was going to be a significant $25M(8.7%) cap hit like the Cowboys have done going into FA with several of their recent stars.

With both Dak and Lamb the team essentially cap hamstrung themselves with the tag a week before VFA.

There are plenty other examples as well over the past couple CBAs where they use the tag and then talk about having no money with the need to sign their own guys.

If they are indeed focusing on getting Parsons done now, it is a massive change in policy and frankly what a lot of people myself included have been asking for.
