this is a place to discuss movies nominated, acting performances, and everything related to the upcoming Academy Awards. heres is my first posting of this thread. so just this saturday i celebrated my birthday. with that, i decided to go to a movie at drafthouse cinema westlake here in my hometown of San Antonio(i used a free birthday movie pass). i saw American Sniper, i have to admit, its a great movie, my heart my pumping a bit. bradley cooper will definitely win the oscar.

I have no interest in seeing this circle jerk of famous people be it Oscars or Grammys.....
American Sniper however was a great movie.

American Sniper is a good flick, meaning that it probably won't win anything significant. Usually, the popular/hot movies come away disappointed. Best movie and/or best actor will go to some flick that I completely missed purposely or not.

My oldest son really wants to see American Sniper. Thanks, yall, for the good reviews. Today's movies in general aren't any good, and I am not the least bit interested in the Oscars, anymore than I am interested in the Grammys, although some others in my house I guess are, because the TV ended up on that show last night, and I got to see first hand Kanye West make another complete *** moron out of himself AGAIN. From now on, I will pay more attention to the TV, even if I'm not really watching it, and make darn sure it is not on any music awards show. The networks that allow this drivel don't deserve my ratings. Until that idiot is banned from all music awards shows, I will never watch another one again. I don't know why he is allowed to carry on like he does. Oh, lol, silly me, nevermind. Of course I know.

Yea, that Kanye is a joke. I wonder if Beyonce actually supports what he has done, twice now. At first, I thought it was an act last night and thought.....job well done, he made light of a previous bad situation. Anyways, a tiger can't change his stripes.

We should not let this thread turn into a West debate, half of us might get banned

This year's class is especially bad. But I'll do my mock award ceremony:

Best Picture:

Nominees:

American Sniper: Saw it. Not bad. They showed him to be Mr. Perfect. Acting was solid. Good but not great.
Birdman: Saw it. Can't understand the hype. Thought it was awful. Seriously surprised people think this is a good movie.
Boyhood: Haven't seen so I won't judge it. But I wouldn't be surprised if it's getting hype because of its gimmick and not its quality.
Grand Budapest Hotel: Saw it. Pretty good. I enjoyed it. Once again, good but nothing special.
The Imitation Game: Saw it. Liked it. I might be biased because I'm a comp sci guy and a Turing fan. Acting was good.
Selma: Haven't seen it. Was going to but decided to see something else. Not very interested to be honest. Seen a lot of MLK stuff already.
The Theory of Everything: Saw it. Liked it. Acting was great. Story was intriguing. Best of this year's crop but not an all-time great.
Whiplash: Haven't seen it. Don't no much about it. No comment.

Winner: The Theory of Everything.

I only saw 5 of 8 but I thought it was a well done movie. It was a toss up between this one and The Imitation Game.

Best Actor:

Nominees:

Steve Carrell: Haven't seen Foxcatcher. Interested in seeing Carrell's performance though.
Bradley Cooper: He was good. I've seen better performances. Cooper is building a nice resume for himself though.
Benedict Cumberbatch: Very good performance. Not much else to say.
Michael Keaton: Don't understand why people like Birdman and don't understand what Keaton did that was special.
Eddie Redmayne: Great performance. Was very surprised. I'd give him a slight nod over Cumberbatch.

Winner: Eddie Redmayne.

Saw 4 of the 5 performances. Slight, slight edge to Redmayne. He came out of nowhere. Memorable performance in my opinion.

I was gonna do a whole thing but I realized I'd probably give everything to The Theory of Everything. And the funny thing is, I didn't think it was that amazing of a movie. The performances were great though. This was just a really weak year of nominations.

Either the theme from Selma, or the Glenn Campbell song will win that respective Oscar. Normally, I'd say the Selma one would walk away with it, as the movie probably won't win best picture, so there'd be the consolation vote going for the music. But the Glenn Campbell piece and story has some powerful emotional resonance, so I don't feel confident as to which one will win.

Yeah, I had actually deleted my post, I was thinking it was about Oscars and Grammys for some stupid reason, lol, but I see you quoted it before I did. Oops!
But, I also thought he was joking at first, Dexter. I rewound it and watched it again and realized he was wasn't.:omg:

anyone seen The Grand Budapest Hotel? its a great and hilarious movie, saw it on HBO Signature last night. i recommend you all see it.

So he wasn't playing when he stood up and took a step towards Beck? I thought he was, and yet Beck played it off beautifully by acting as though he was going to hand over the award.

I noticed Kanye was holding court in an interview after the fact saying how things have to change in order for those more deserving to get theirs. Personally I think Kanye is a talentless, piece of ****!

I've seen 3 of those movies (American Sniper, Boyhood, and TToE), and I would say American Sniper was the best. Even then I wouldn't say it was great, just solid. I can't speak for Birdman or Budapest, but once again it appears there is a heavy bias towards very serious movies. I don't get where the idea comes from that serious movies are better film. I'll see Birdman soon, but I'm not too excited about Budapest considering it's by Wes Anderson.

I agree that the movies nominated this year were not that great. But Budapest definitely isn't a serious movie. It's a typical Wes film that relies on sarcasm and irony. Not my cup of tea but I wouldn't call it serious. And I don't know what to call Birdman. It definitely had a sense of humor. Norton was fantastic. I wouldn't say it took itself too seriously. But it was definitely one of those "artsy" movies that the critics love. I personally thought the movie was awful.

It won't happen but I would like Bradley to win best actor oscar.

But I think it goes to Keaton.

Best movie: Budapest

I've seen all but Foxcatcher. My favorite two performances are Cumberbatch and Redmayne, with Redmayne winning due to his convincing portrayal of Hawking at each level of physical deterioration.

I agree with you on all the ones you've seen except for Birdman, which was actually my favorite of the bunch. I loved the (mostly) continuous shot of the film and it felt like the dark comedy was somewhat of a parallel to Keaton's own career. It was silly in spots, but it worked for me.
