It's more prevalent in a situation where a cap exists. So you'd see this more in football than baseball...

i believe Aikman restructured his deal at least a couple of times
to help the Boys pick up/ resign valuable players. so its not unheard of.
still was nice to see Chipper doing it.

So, he still gets the same amount of total money in the contract, just not the same amount per season over the next 3 years.

A-Rod did it back in 2001 so that the Rangers could sign...Chan Ho Park...geez, thanks A-Rod!

But in A-Rod's case it was more like a loan, instead of paying a certain amount in 01 the money would be paid out, if I'm not mistaken between 2011 and 2017 at 3% interest.
