Alcohol sales banned from Jets-Patriots game

NFL.com wire reports

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Dec. 20, 2005) -- Alcohol won't be sold during the Monday Night Football game between the Jets and Patriots at the Meadowlands in an attempt to quell rowdy fan behavior.

The ban comes after nine fans were arrested during the Jets-Saints game Nov. 27. One man was charged with stabbing two fans in a restroom, and a state trooper broke his leg while trying to eject a fan who reportedly threw a beer bottle.

Jets spokesman Ron Colangelo said the ban was put in place to protect fans. The Jets and New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority made the joint decision.

"It's for precautionary reasons, to provide for the safety and comfort of our fans," Colangelo said.

Colangelo said alcohol will be available at the Jets' season finale Jan. 1 against Buffalo, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET.

Earlier this year, NJSEA president George Zoffinger pledged to deal with the problem of drunk fans.

9 people dictate how 75,000 will be treated. I have never understood that mentality. But it isn't my place to rule on it.

tailgating is the main problem. if you've been to Giant's stadium (or the arena) you'd know what i'm saying. this gives them 3-4 hours to sober up a bit.

No they will just tail gate harder

Pats went thru this in late 80's early 90's. It was so bad I wouldn't take a kid in there. Mob mentality, fighting, totally hammered fans and I kid you not pissing in the aisles, in corners of stadium.

At one point they banned beer sales after the incident where a bunch of knuckleheads ripped down a goalpost and took it out of stadium and were killed when it hit a live wire.

They then were selling low alcohol beers. Found as they raised ticket prices the crowd mix improved but what really turned the tide was - individuals doing stupid things are nabbed and have season tickets taken away. In fact over 1,000 people a season lose season tickets......

they pat you down pretty good -

One could get shot bottles in no problem.

OT more - NCAA bans alcohol at NCAA games or did last time I went. You should have seen the massive bottle stash in bathroom garbage cans.
