NEW ORLEANS (Dec. 14, 2005) -- New Orleans Saints players will get a $40,000 bonus from the NFL and the NFL Players Association for "performing under unusual and unanticipated conditions arising from the Hurricane Katrina tragedy."

The bonus applies to every Saints player who has been on the roster for the entire season, including inactive players, practice squad members and those on injured reserve, the team said in a statement. Players on the roster for less than the full season will receive $2,350 for each week on the roster.

The payments will be funded using the performance-based pay system normally geared to playing time and salary, which is part of the NFL collective bargaining agreement.

Following Hurricane Katrina in August, the Saints moved to San Antonio and have played most of their home games in the Alamodome and Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

53 players at $40,000 is $2,120,000

I bet there are some people more effected by the Hurricane that that 2 million could be given to who need it a lot more.

I have seen the numbers from Red Cross and other agencies and the people of New Orleans are getting a ton of well deserved money. I think it's a nice gesture by the NFL. I have no problem with it whatsoever.

They shuold all get together and decide on a non-profit organization to donate all that money to in order to help the citizens of New Orleans.

Another brand new car will not help them as much as food, utility bills paid in full, clothing, rent money and medicine will help the poor people affected by Katrina.

You can bet that someone got rich on money that was supposed to go to Katrina victims.

There has been a ton of money given with good intentions that never made it there I would presume.

Actually, I think this is fair to the players -- they've had to be away from family more, etc. They did sign to play in a specific location, moved there, etc. only to be displaced. They likely have incurred extra costs due to the itinerant nature of the team this year. Obviously this was beyond anyone's control but the league is doing the right thing here. Imagine your moved to Los Angeles for your job, then your company told you that you were going to have to split the year working in New York and Seattle -- you'd expect a little $$ for your trouble too.

I've got no problem with a minimum salary guy keeping this $$. Yes, some of them make $225K a year. But for many, that is the most they will ever make in a year. It is not like those salaries continue for the rest of their lives. They should keep that extra money -- they will need it in the future.

Now for players with big contracts -- they need to step up and donate that $$ to relief efforts.

They should take that money from the Giants who are the only ones that have benefitted from this whole thing.
