OU faces no further NCAA penalties; Sampson banned from recruiting
The Oklahoman
The NCAA's Committee on Infractions have accepted Oklahoma's self-imposed penalties on its basketball team, but has imposed more restrictions on Kelvin Sampson, who left OU to be the new head coach at Indiana.
Coverage from the Indianapolis Star
NCAA's official release / Complete report
In its report released today, the Committee said Sampson committed "willful violations that created a significant recruiting advantage for him and his program."
The five-year NCAA investigation stems from 577 impermissible phone calls from 2000-04. According to the NCAA, Sampson made 233 of those calls.
Oklahoma had already made reductions in its scholarships (from 13 to 11 for last season and 13 to 12 for 2006-07) and reductions in calls allowed to recruits.
Oklahoma had also frozen Sampson's salary and bonuses.
Indiana had already transfered several of OU's penalties to Sampson, including restrictions of calls and visit.
Under the NCAA's new penalties Sampson is prohibited from any off-campus recruiting visits or calls to recruits for a year.
Indiana's contract with Sampson gives the school the right to fire him, depending on the severity of the NCAA's decision. Indiana has not commented on the NCAA's report today.
According to Sampson's contract at Indiana, the school "may take further action, up to and including termination with cause" if the NCAA "imposes more significant penalties or sanctions than the University of Oklahoma's self-imposed sanctions."
I really don't care about Bball, but I think this is the way it should be.
