Our counterpart team - The Broncos

I've said for a while that the Broncos were our counterpart team, but that they were slightly ahead of us in 2013, and significantly ahead of us in 2014.

I want to say now that we're probably ahead of the Broncos now. Their loss of Julius Thomas, our acquisition of Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory.

I'm not sure about pressures, but it has to be recognized that Hardy was ranked 3rd in sacks in 2013.

Greg Cosell said in February that Randy Gregory was a better prospect than Jadeveon Clowney....I think the Broncos did well in getting Shane Ray, but I don't think that will be enough to maintain themselves. That offense was just terribly pedestrian by the end of the year, and keeping Manning healthy and productive with less weapons on offense. I think that will be difficult.

I think our offense can be as productive with the assistance of our defense even without Murray. I'll always suggest that getting Adrian Peterson would put us over the top, but I still think this team can get there without him.

Biggest difference between us and the Broncos on offense was their aggressiveness in passing the ball. The difference is about 100 more passes on offense, which is about 6 more passes per game. Demarius Thomas got about 50 more targets than Dez did. We also need to see Terrance Williams step it up in year 3. You compare his career trajectory with Sanders and he has the potential to do a lot more, but he seemed to regress in a lot of ways last year. And what would you say if I told you that an underutilized Cole Beasley had a better year than Wes Welker (though Welker missed a couple games)?

This line still needs to improve a great deal on pass pro. We really could use Collins. Manning took about half the sacks on a lot more attempts. We basically just have to become more proficient.

I think williams is progressing but hard to do stuff when he team as a whole is throwing less, and being arguable the 3rd or 4th option on most passing plays probably does not help. Put that all together and targets are down across so les passes to spread around.

Broncos had 607 pass attempts last season or 37.94 attempts per game. Dallas had 476 pass attempts last season or 29.75 attempts per game. That is a difference of 8.19 attempts per game. Denver had 40 TD passes while Dallas had 37 TD passes. While Denver was more aggressive passing the ball, Dallas was more efficient.

Denver is going down and going down hard IMO. Their OL is about as suspect as Manning has played on since getting there. And of course, now Wade Phillips will be there. The defense might get better for a year or two, then it will fizzle, just like it did in Houston.

Bingo.

The Broncos offensive line is no where near the Cowboys' offensive line.

Furthermore, the Broncos run their offense through Peyton Manning. We run our offensive through the offensive line and the running game.

That's why the Broncos faded down the stretch and why we got stronger.

And (this is a question for the general audience) how were we the counterparts to the Broncos? In what way?

Wasn't the defense always good in Houston when Wade was there, even the year he was let go?

Now is about the time I start looking at other team's drafts. The Broncos did horrible IMO. Outside of Ray, some real questionable selections.

Until last year I always thought the Cowboy's counterpart team (in the AFC) was the Chargers.

And you were absolutely right. The Chargers have for a long time been our counterpart in the AFC, but right now it is definitely the Broncos and I think it has been that way for the last 2 years actually.

No the Texans had poor defense but pretty good offense for a long time. Wade made that defense pretty elite.

A poor defense? They were pretty stout in 2011, rarely allowed over 100 yards rushing by an opposing team. That was pretty much Phillips thing in Houston, stopping the run. I know it succeeded in 2011 and 2012. They also got to the QB often, Watt had his breakout season under Wade.

I never had any problems with Wade as a DC, he's been a DC in this league since the 80s. He just wasn't much of a HC.

I think we got off on the wrong foot, and it was my fault. I misread what you said, but we're arguing the same thing. I thought you said even the year before he got there.

I continue to find your posting history interesting. It seems you are consistently gone for long stretches and then come on really strong for a few days always with a minimum of 3 new threads. This appears to be that key 3rd thread by you in the past couple of days. It would be interesting to know what is blocking you from the internet when your away.

I think you think about this too much and don't realize that most of us have jobs and lives to live...

If it is the offseason, and not a lot of things worth talking about, I'll probably focus on other things not related to the cowboys.

It is very rare for any other poster to make 3 new threads in a day or so, but you do it every time you return. I'm not complaining, I just find it amusing that something seems to be cutting off your access to the internet.

Lets hope that next time there's a disappearance, it's cut off permanently.
