1. Spencer. The man. Thomas and Brown both said the guy gave them fits. He made Harris look like a joke (of course he is). Pass rush. Allows us to move Carp inside to take James place.

2. Marten. Solid guy from a place (BC) that is a FACTORY in turning out pro O linemen. Played guard for 2 years then LT last year.

3. Stanback. Has a gun for an arm. Team leader. Can catch, pass, run, return. Jack of all trades. Very good size if we put him at WR. Lots of possibilities- maybe even as the third QB.

4. Free. 49 straight starts- played his whole senior season with a stress fracture in his foot. Definitly not a Rogers type.

5. Folk. Best combo of punter and kicker in the draft. Competition for AUtomatica and maybe kickoff specialist and backup punter. We shall see.

6. Anderson. This pick I question. Hope the boys know a lot more then any of the scouts do. BLocking is not supposedly all that good- ?.

7. Brown. SERIOUS speed and very raw. No one wanted to throw at him. A project but with lots of potential. 6' 1 1/2, 196, 4.39 40.

8. Ball. 6'1 1/2 176 lbs, 4.5 40. ANother project. BUt it was late in the 7th...

Overall a LOT of potential here. Spencer and maybe Folk will be the only immediate contributors. Maybe some of the others will stand out on ST.
Have good depth at Tackle now. MOre CBs which is good. Only thing I wanted us to get that we did not was a NT. Right now I think - when adding the Cleveland pick for next year- this is a solid B.

1, 2, 4 and 7 were very good picks, IMO. The rest were meh, but this wasn't a deep draft. If 2 of the 4 I mentioned become starters, the rest depth, and we get a great player next year with Cleveland's pick, this was a very nice draft.

I think the picks by themselves are around a B-.

Throw in the Cleveland's 2008 First Round Pick (Probably Top 10, Maybe Top 5) and I move it up to an A-.

Damn good couple of days from Valley Ranch.

Color me optimistic:

Spencer - loved the pick
Marten and Free - potential OT's of the future
Folk - kicker for many years
Brown - future starting CB
Cleveland's 1st rounder

That is a hell of a draft right there.

I wanted to come away with some linemen, and we did. I really like what I have read about Courtney Brown, and his attitude, so I'm pleased with that. The stuff in the first round speaks for itself. We parlayed our number 22 into Spencer AND a possible top 10 next year. Pass rusher + a blue chip in the next draft makes it a very nice draft.

Not flashy, but anyone who expected that or a lot of great players this year fooled themselves.

I think it was a pretty weak draft...could have done better...could have had an extra third and still got spencer...jerry doesnt know what he is doing...

It will take a while- probably at least 2 years- before we can get any handle at all on how good this draft is- due to the project status of most of the picks.

Future starters:

Spencer
Marten
Free
Brown

Kicker of the future in Folk

Next years 1st rounder from Cleveland (top 10 pick at worst)

That adds up to a pretty darn good draft.

Subject to change, my grade is a solid B+ possibly higher based on next years Cleveland's pick.

I don't think both of our new O linemen will end up starting. I think one ends up as a backup if they stick.

I'm trying not to be overly optimistic -- that's my default setting and I'm tired of signing off on the Jacob Rogers and Stephen Petermans of the world. I'm on the lookout for guys who aren't going to work out.

So here's my attempt to be coldly analytical:

I divide this draft into 3 parts:

Part A includes the two first trades and the Spencer pick. I give that part an A.

Part B was the trading down for more picks and the 3rd round selection. I give that a C. We got a little value out of it but that was too cute IMO. Marten looks fine, could be very good, is certainly versatile. I'll believe Marten's a good player when I see it.

Part C was Day 2 and I give it a B-. I actually like taking a kicker -- I've never agreed with the CW on this one. The CBs are camp fodder/practice squadders with potential. The FB is a great kid who will be fun to root for. We need a return man so I'm willing to give that kid a shot. The other OT certainly looks pretty darn solid but he's got some serious competition to make this roster.

Big picture and overall grade: B+ with potential to increase. We went from 10 picks down to 8, which I was calling for. We traded for a future number 1, which I was calling for (and got a great one at that). We didn't have any truly needy positions -- the guys we got will all have a fighting chance. And we got one of the 2 main guys we were targetting (Merriwether and Spencer) for the 1st.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Stanback on this thread. He was drafted to be a receiver. Strong combination of size and speed gives him a lot of potential as a receiver and the combination of TO and Terry Glenn give him time to realize that potential.

Until then he automatically challenges Miles Austin/Tyson Thompson for the top kick returner spot, Sam Hurd for the last receiver slot and can step into the punt returner position.

Turns out that Stanback is even faster then we thought. So he could possibly shake things up even more.
