I was going to do some research on this, but ESPN did part of it for me --

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/notebook?page=sundaycountdown07

According to this article at ESPN.com, our opponents have completed only 31 percent of all passes thrown 16 yards or more past the line of scrimmage. That ranks No. 1 in the NFL for pass defenses.

So much for the theory that teams can attack Roy and Hamlin by throwing the deep ball. And give credit to Watkins, too, who has been much better than he was for most of last season.

Watching the Lions game? Another reason stats are pointless.:bang2:

Isn't that the truth.

We're so petrified of the long pass that we can't stop anyone from attacking us underneath.

Our line looks like the problem today. Our front 7 got owned today. And you can probably say the same about GB againt Rogers.

Still gotta think that schemes didn't help Dallas today, either...This has been the case now against GB, NE and Detroit...Why not play some man back there on occasion and fill the box?...They were getting shredded by the zone all game.

Agreed. IMO a big reason for that is Henry still hobbled. I saw him taken out of the game at least once today. We need him healthy, and fast.

I'd sit him out the last game of the season. Give him 3 weeks of rest.

Newman came out of the Green Bay game for a series. He was limping. The guy is still playing at 80%.

Gotta give Lions credit...They brought much better pressure than Dallas did despite all signs pointing to it being the other way around.

I will re-iterate again and again.
We are playing a very soft zone because Hamlin and Roy are weak at deep coverage. We are having to play a specific scheme to cover up their weakness.
The scheme is preventing the deep ball but teams are racking up yards in the passing game by throwing underneath.

Well, if that's the case then all this talk of extending Hamlin's deal seems to make little sense

Why does talk of extending him not make since?
I didn't say he was a bad player.

But he and Roy are not great at deep coverage -- that is, in part, why we play so soft and give up short and medium range passes.

If that were true, then we would be getting beaten on deep passes WHEN the opponent throws deep. But we're not. We're No. 1 in the league at stopping deep passes.

Wade is clear that the defense is catered to stopping the big play. Defending the deep pass is not the issue with this team.

No, not really. Our coverage is a result of the aggressive style of Wade up front. We also do this to keep our corners in a position to break on the ball after a QB is forced to make a pass because of an aggressive rush. The CBs focus on the reading the QB a lot more than the style they played with Bill. The problem is our pass rush hasn't been there, and it could be for a number of reasons, among them, teams going max-protect.
