I know there is a big push here to sign a quaility free agent WR but would any of the players that are currently available (Walker, Hacket, Gafney, etc...) really be an upgrade over Hurd or Austin?

I understand that neither player has much experience but I think they showed a great deal of potential - especially Hurd - and can play and contribute on the NFL level. Consider the fact that they have an added year of experience now as well.

I don't know much about Stanbeck other than he is athletic and is a bit of a project.

What are you guys thoughts on the quality of our young receivers vice the remaining FA's?

I think Walker has more talent than any of our young WR...as a #3 and with Hurd a #4 we would be alright.

I like Hurd but it wouldn't take much to replace Austin.

As you guys serious? Have you seen Javon Walker play when he's healthy? The guy has great hands & good speed -- if he can stay healthy. Hurd has good hands but lacks the speed to be anything more then a #3 WR which we already have in Crayton. Now Austin has the speed, but lacks consistency in the passing game. Count me on board our getting Walker IF and that is a big IF he's healthy and if he willing sign a cheap 1 year incentive-based contract (maybe with an option for a 2nd year).

I doubt Walker will sign for more then 1 year cause I think he wants to use this year to re-establish & highlight his WR skills and then head off for another team where he'll get the big bucks and also be their #1 WR. I don't know what went wrong in Denver but certainly his injury (maybe also his attitude?) sure caused things to go south. With his old position coach in Green Bay as his WR coach (Sherman) in Dallas, that should go a long way to keep him in line; also read somewhere that he and TO are friends & TO also thinks the world of Sherman. Of course I also expect the Cowboys to use one of their first rounders to draft a good young WR (Kelly, Hardy, Thomas) are my choices. Having Walker onboard will give the rookie time to learn about blocking, route running & how the WR position is played in the NFL.

None of our young WRs have done anything yet to distinguish themselves even though they had a golden opportunity last season with Glenn out for most of the year.

I was surprised that we gave Crayton so much money but he is a decent player. Hurd has shown some skills but is limited. Austin & Stanback have athletic ability but are very unpolished and need a lot more work.

I have advocated for a number of years now that we need to spend some high picks on WRs so that they will be ready to play when our veterans are no longer able to. Now we are in a bind if Glenn can't play at 100%.

Signing a guy like Walker (who we don't have to trade for!) is a very good idea even if Glenn is healthy as we need 3 starting quality WRs since Owens & Glenn have health issues. I'd still like to see us draft a guy in the first round if a good one is available.

I could easily let Austin walk and use Stanback on STs since he showed a knack in the return game.

I like Hurd.....I think he has shown something.....he wont ever be a #1 in this league.....but I think he could be a good #2....JMHO....love his work ethic.

Stanback I hope will come along like so many of us hope....I know Wade and Jerry were very impressed with him......so who knows......

i'm not so sure hurd could be a #2 just like i think crayton would be better at being #3 instead of #2

Austin has the speed to stretch the field, he had a chance to show what he had in the Skins game and dropped some balls.

Our gameplan usually was to wait late in the game to put Austin in with fresh legs against a tired CB and run a go route - in the giants game he got ten yards past McQuarters, but Romo didn't have time to get the ball out. Austin makes the team over Hurd, but whoever loses out will find some work very fast.

Hurd played the 3rd WR position all season last year. And he contributed very little. Seriously, 20 receptions in 17 games is not going to get you anywhere.

That's cause he was probably the 4th or 5th option on every play, despite being #3.

if Hurd is allowed extensive playing time for a few years, I could see him creeping up the receptions chart, sort of like what Crayton did, since they're pretty similar type receivers, nothing special, but will catch the ball

That's not intended to imply that he's better than his numbers suggest is it?

Well, I'd hope so. There's really no where to go but up in terms of production.

I'm not implying anything. I'm stating what I believe and what I saw.

I'd take him over Austin any day of the week as a receiver.

Walker would be an immediate upgrade over Hurd and Austin.

As far as which young WR I like. I like Austin. His hands were suspect but I think he runs pretty good routes and he has decent speed.

Hurd just looks goofy out there. Almost like he hasn't grown into himself or something.

I doubt either is going to be anything special but I think the ceiling on Austin is higher then the ceiling on Hurd.

Another WR needs to be found. FA or 1st day in the draft....hell, maybe both.

The question was whether you would take Walker, Hackett, or Gaffney over Hurd and Austin.

Well, I have mixed feelings about Walker, only because I am very concrned about his current health. Having said that, he is absolutly better then what we currently have on hand. He is better then any of our WRs with the exception of TO. The question is, can he be healthy.

I think Gaffney would be a good signing because he is a guy you could get on the field with experience and some talent. He's not a #1 WR but he can be a productive WR for us. I'd say he's better then what we have in our younger WRs at this point.

Hackett, I'm not as sure of. He's more of a WC WR but he has skills. I watched Hackett at Colorado. I think he can probably play in our offense. He's coming off injury so there is that but he's still young and his best football is probably still in front of him. I would say he's probably better then our young guys right now. Heck, he caught 32 balls in 6 games. You project that out and that's over 80 catches.

Johnson, he's definatly better then anything we have other then TO IMO. He has the speed to make a double on TO hard. He can beat single coverage deep and he can get open. Catches the ball.

IMO, any of these guys would be better then what we currently have, if for no other reason then the fact that they've all started games and have had success.
