Fellow 'zoners,

What are we to make of last weekend? If the most vivd stories are concerning the potential of our #3 and the skinny legs of our #5, does this mean the overall impressions are average?

I am interested to know what the results were like for our so-called sleeper Pepi Zellner at the same stage a few years ago. (2 not entirely connected questions, but would greatly appreciate your responses! Also, i am NOT trying to compare the styles of Hatcher & Zellner).

One reporter, Mickey?, said that Hatcher absolutely dominated against his peers in the rookie camp. In other words, the other rookies.

But he said it remains to be seen what he will do against Flozell, etc. in the mini camps in June.

I agree with that, however I do consider that good news and believe that it bodes well for him. I can't answer the question about Zellner. I don't remember.

I don't take much from minicamps. They are just player indoctrinations for the most part.

Player gets a grasp on your offense and defense.

Coaches get a grasp on players mental attitude and physical shape.

BP tells them if they are fat or too skinny.

Come away with what is expected from them up till the next minicamp or TC.

I read that Carpenter is a very good athlete, runs great straight, sidways, and back pedal....he is a keeper is super duper pick!

Carpenter, Fasano and Hatcher will be starting in the first game of the season and that's the important thing to me. I think Carpenter is smart and athletic enough, to overtake Singleton and Fasano will be starting in a position created just for him. Hatcher will get thrown into the mix right away and will probably see more work inside than outside at 6-6 290. Green and Watkins will play mostly on special teams this year, until they get their feet wet. I really don't see Watkins starting right away with veterans like Davis and Coleman competing with him at FS. Stanley, McQuistan and Whitley are for depth purposes this year and probably won't even dress for most games.

Considering the fact that Hatcher has never played a 3-4, you are really ecpecting a great deal to have him starting over Spears and or Canty who played a 3-4 in college.

Hatcher wont be starting.. I do agree that he will be seeing lots of playing time, but no way does he start.. remember Chris Canty, Marcus Spears, and Greg Ellis?

Unless that is in nickle or pass rushing situations, I see that as close to never going to happen. With his quickness and size, he is a DE, in 3-4 and can even be a DE in 4-3 I think. But he could be a DT I guess in 4-3.

I meant the nickle for Hatcher, which is just like starting to me for the defensive line. However, Dallas could even start the first series against Jacksonville using a 4-3 front with Hatcher playing DT...who knows. If Hatcher is truly a 4.7 speed guy, he could line up anywhere along the line at his size.

Ok, in Nickle situation I guess maybe it could happen. But like you said, based on reports, he is 4.7 guy in shorts at VR, so he can line up anywhere. I think out of Spears/Canty/Hatcher trio, probably Canty is the only guy who is a DT in 4-3 for sure, since he doesn't seem to have the speed to be a DE in 4-3.

What's it going to be then, eh?

In Jimmy Johnson's first year as Cowboys head coach, we had a high draft choice named Rhondie (sp?) Weston from Florida.

Preseason magazines at the time reported that he absolutely dominated in minicamps.

He didn't even make it to the final cut.

I know it is fun to dream about stealing a force and even more fun to imagine it is Hatcher. I would rather wait until I see the player in action with pads and against an OL with true hostile intentions before I brand him anything.

I remember the Rhondy(?) Weston pick very well. A mid-lower round choice, I think. never knew what happened to them in those days. Just noticed in the UK that we never saw him playing or in the weekly published stats!
