strategically, the 3rd receiver isn't important to us. Hurd didn't have a spectacular year last year.

19 rec, 314 yds, 1 td

Felix Jones and Martellus Bennett more than spark our offense enough to make up for the loss of Hurd and Austin compared to their production last year. Especially if Crayton has improved.

Number of receptions by wideouts not named owens or crayton last year?
24
number of touchdowns?
1
number of yards?
390

Yeah... I can definitely see all that going to Felix Jones and Martellus Bennett.

Felix Jones will get at least 10-15 touches per game on offense alone. In comparison the Eagles passed the ball to Westbrook 90 times last year. More than any receiver on the team. And that was on top of his 278 rushing attempts. Westbrook is smaller than Felix Jones. Westbrook runs a 4.57 40. And even in a slower 40, Jones ran a 4.47.

Martellus Bennett will be huge in the redzone creating match up problems for the defense.

Good point,

If Stanbach can't go Sunday, I expect one of the young WRs (Amendola, Jefferson) will be activated. You need that 3rd WR just in case something happens to the #1-2 WR. We definitely have passing options at TE and RB.

I think we'll be OK for a little while, but we can't go longer than 2 games with just 2 healthy receivers.

The key word is healthy, TO and Crayton are more than capable. I hoping we don't need to have any shootouts in the beginning of the season. Keeping our 2 starting WRs somewhat rested would be nice.

Hopefully the D can carry us some until our WR corp gets back to full strength.

I don't think thats an accurate assessment because when Crayton was our 3rd WR he was used more. I think you need to factor in the development process of the younger guys. Also factor in how many times we were in 3 WR sets. How many passes were thrown their way.

Isn't Stanback out for good? Didn't he separate his shoulder?

Cowboyfan, this was posted in the Daily Zone:

DMN: Brian Davis: Cowboys stay thin at wide receiver

Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton are the team's only healthy, experienced receivers going into Sunday's season opener in Cleveland. Miles Austin and Sam Hurd will miss the opener with injuries. Isaiah Stanback is expected to practice with a shoulder harness this week, but his status is questionable.

If we have no third WR for the game Sunday I expect to see Felix Jones lining up in the slot with Crayton staying outside. Not a best case scenario by any means but a workable solution given that The Cat has been seeing some time in the slot.

I think this is the most likely scenario.

Boy you people are a piece of work. if the 3rd WR was not needed. how come every NFL team at times use the 3 and 4 WR sets?what you posted is pure nonesense.Felix will not get 10 to 15 touches a game. and he is not a WR.stop fooling yourself folks. we need WR's.PERIOD!

Mickey said this morning that the cowboys didnt claim a single player and he doesnt expect any activity until thursday or friday and that it was very quiet over the weekend.

I think in reading what theebs posted in another thread, I think that the plan may be to evaluate Stanbach at the end of the week. If he can't go, then they'll bring up one or both of the young WRs from the practice squad.

We'll do fine with what we have against Cleveland. We'll know more after the first game. My only concern is we wait too long to do something. Is Hurd supposed to be back for the Philthy game, or the GB game?

We are talking 1 maybe 2 games here and a slot receiver NEVER gets 10 to 15 touches per game. And since Felix will not (as you say) get many touches it would not be overworking him to run him in the slot for a game. Again it is not ideal but it may work until we get Hurd or Austin back. For one or two games we can make do with Felix and/or Bennett filling in.

I do agree that we need to add a WR as I'm not counting on Stanback personally...he has physical talent but I fear that he will spend so much time on the injury list that he will never pan out. Until I see two thing from him (the ability to actually play WR and the ability to stay healthy) we have only 4 WR's on the roster IMO. If/when we finally ditch him he may go on to be a Jimmy Smith somewhere else...but I doubt it.
