Owens' contract details

Terrell Owens got a $12.9 million signing bonus, and he has a $3.1 million roster bonus due next season. His base salaries are $830,000 this season, $2.67 million in 2009, $7.5 million in 2010 and $7 million in 2011.

His cap numbers --

Because of the uncapped year in 2010, his contract has to follow the 30 percent rule for 2009, 2010 and 2011. His 2009 salary (base plus roster bonus) is $5.77 million. Thirty percent of that is $1.731 million. That means his salaries for 2010 and 2011 can't increase by more than that. His actual increase for 2010 is $1.730, and it actually decreases by $500,000 for 2011.

If the CBA is extended before 2009, his roster bonus and/or the amount of his base salary above the minimum can be prorated, which could lower his cap number to as little as $5.712 million (saving about $3.283 million of cap room).

Before the extension, Owens' cap number for this season was $8,673,388, which means we saved $2.945 million with his new contract. That leaves us $8,284,718 under the cap.

These seem like such high numbers. Does this type of pay structure cripple us if Owens becomes unable to fulfill the contract? I'm really glad we have him locked but would rather avoid cap hell again.
