Owens-Moss showdown coming

Chad Johnson may be headed for Canton, Ohio (Future H.O.F, 20??), but Randy Moss and Terrell Owens are headed for a showdown.

That'll take place Oct. 14, when Moss and the New England Patriots visit Owens and the Dallas Cowboys.
Let the hype begin for the type of showdown that generates headlines, drives ratings and sells tickets.
There are, of course, other wide receivers.

Cincinnati's Johnson led the NFL in receiving yards last season (1,369). Houston's Andre Johnson led the league in receptions (103). Marvin Harrison leads all active players in touchdown receptions (122) and catches passes for the defending-Super Bowl champion Colts. The Commanders' Antwaan Randle El (remember him?) averaged 32.4 yards per catch while amassing 162 receiving yards on the opening weekend. The Giants' Plaxico Burress (remember him?) accounted for 144 yards and three TDs.

Those are just a few of the game-breakers stretching defenses these days.

Still, Moss and Owens have separated themselves in that no two receivers in the league combine combustibility with a contemptibility that compels organizations to wonder if their unquestioned talent is worth the accompanying trouble.

Owens is in is 12th season and Moss his 10th. Both are with their third NFL team.

Moss particularly has something to prove after giving up millions via the restructuring of his contract to land in New England. He'll either be the missing link for Tom Brady or the undoing of the Patriots; there is no in-between.

He appears comfortable with doing things Bill Belichick's way after amassing nine catches for 183 yards and a touchdown against the Jets.

Owens, too, has been a human distraction/discipline problem repeatedly over the years and seemed to particularly clash with former Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells.

In his first game playing for Wade Phillips, Owens was shut out in the first half, but grabbed three passes for 87 yards and a spectacular score in the final two quarters of a win over the Giants.

The best from both is something to behold.

Owens caught 93 passes for 1,412 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2001, the only season in which he's started 16 games.

Moss grabbed 111 balls for 1,632 yards and 17 TDs in 2003.
Anything approaching that this season promises to be nothing short of captivating.

Tale of the tape
Moss T.O.
6-4 Height 6-3
197 Weight 217
102 TD catches 116
11.2 Avg. TDs per season 10.4
5 Pro Bowls 5
3 All-Pro seasons 5
685 Receptions 804
10,883 Receiving yards 11,802
15.9 Average per catch 14.7
5th in receiving TDs All-time achievement 4th in receiving TDs

If Newman happens to be out for the NE game, I am going to cry. It could get ugly. REAL ugly.

History will show that Moss is open when he gets off the bus and remains open until he lays down for sleep..........

Ya know, most teams would double him and put their best CB on the second receiver. I'm thinking we probably don't want to do that with our safeties. :)

yeah, that was his rookie yr 1998...I think thats one of the games Deion missed with the infamous toe injury

Deion was having arguably his best yr ever before the toe injury too...I remember there was alot of talk of him being DPOY...I doubt Moss would have had the kind of day he did had 21 been in there 100%

I do remember him covering Moss on one deep pass. I don't remember the year, but Deion was having toe turf problems.

it was a deep fade, one on one with Moss, Deion broke it up. Cunningham was QB.

Does anyone remember that play, or any other plays involving them?

Luckily, we have the receiving threats this go round to minimize any 'great Owens/Moss' showdowns. Brady has a ton of receivers to throw to, but Romo has Witten, Crayton, Hurd--and if need be, Fasano off the bench. Regardless of whether Moss and Owens get their yards or TDs, our offense has already demonstrated enough to show how dangerous it can be beyond it's primary receiving threat.

Do you remember any of the defensive backs playing in that game for Dallas? It was weird how Dallas was snake bit on the injury department for that game. Deion was out. Kevin Smith started and gave up the first TD. It was on a flea flicker, so it wasn't as if Smith just got flat beat. Smith had previously missed time with an injury that year and got hurt again in that game and probably played less than a half. They were signing guys off the streets to play in the secondary for that game. That makes for a bad combination to cover Moss and a Vikings offense that was on a roll that season. Moss has had good games against Dallas, but that particular game Dallas did not have a chance to cover any receiver due to their injuries.

Good post.. and true.... but its still gonna be about Moss and Owens.

You can put Moss down for 3 TD's.
TO will have 2 TD's.

Lets hope Romo and co can cash in the rest needed.

Belicheck knows how Moss plays the Cowboys. He will gameplan to abuse us.

Just gotta look out for the camera's.

I put Moss down for 0 TDs. He may get some yardage, but he will not see the endzone. That will be done by other players and most likely the tight ends as Dallas focuses on Moss.

It still amazes me how THREE defenders are running with Moss(almost creating a circle around him) and yet NEVER do I see ONE of them look back for the ball. If they did they could atleast break up the pass. Instead, Moss basket catches a ball in between ALL THREE defenders.

This happened AGAIN against the Jets last week.

It blows my mind.... he guys... one of us should look back... you two guys keep staring at the back of his helmet.

They faced each other in the 1999 playoffs, Deion's final game as a Cowboy.

Deion spent a vast majority of that game locked up on Cris Carter who had 1 reception for 5 yards and 1 TD. I think that one catch happened when Deion was not covering him. Most of the time Dallas was trying to double Moss. I think Kevin Mathis was the other corner. Moss had 5 catches for 127 yards and 1 TD.

If Dallas wins that game I could care less about the so called matchup with TO and Moss. They don't play directly against each other so if Moss has 10 catches for 100 and TO has 1 and Dallas wins that is all I care about the rest is overhyped BS
