Myself, wife, oldest son (25) & youngest daughter (12) are making the trip to Oxnard this year. 1st time at camp. :D We'll arrive the morning of August 5th with intentions of catching the Blue-White scrimmage that afternoon. Staying til Saturday the 6th when we fly home.

Three priorities: Beaches (son has familiarity with those), Disney & related (for the daughter), COWBOYS!

I'm interested in recommendations (hotels in Oxnard - yes I've seen lists, looked online, but want some first hand info) from those who've been there and know the area, sites, and camp tips if any.

Pretty psyched to see the team up close. :D

Mods - Oops, meant this for the fan zone. Just created a duplicate there. Delete this one if necessary.

You are not going to be able to do camp, the beach and Disney in that short of a time, sorry.

Disneyland two hours, maybe worse depending on traffic from Oxnard.

Mods - hope this is ok in this forum for awhile.
Every time I see you post, I think of the coco seinfeld episode that still to this day makes me laugh.

He can catch the blue/white scrimmage Saturday, then head to the beach afterwards.

Then spend all of Sunday @ Disneyland.

I will definitely be making the trip to Oxnard. So pumped.

Also, I thought OP was a chick this whole time.

The blue/white scrimmage is scheduled for Sunday, August 5, per http://www.***BANNED-URL***/sports/...aining-camp-practice-in-oxnard-is-july-30.ece.

Saturday, August 4th 2:30 p.m. - Practice
Sunday, August 5th 2:30 p.m. - Blue-White Scrimmage

Sorry, my bad. Staying the 5th (SUN) through the 10th. Leaving the 11th (SAT). :laugh2:

Ah. That's more like it. I'd check out TripAdvisor.com for places to stay. Oxnard is kind of blah, but you'll likely want to stay near it if you're going to be going to camp a lot. TA can give you the run down, though, on SoCal beaches and hotels.

If you're doing Disney, I recommend going in as soon as the gates open. That early hour you can do as many rides as you'll probably do the rest of the day. Consider a park-hopper pass, or whatever it is they call the passes that allow you to reserve rides in advance. They let you cut time spent in lines if you're only going for one day. I'd also download the Disney app if you've got a smart phone.

Can't go wrong with the beaches, but so some research because the beach scenery varies. There's a big difference between, say, Venice and Hermosa.

Re: camp, it's pretty straightforward. Binoculars are advisable. Kitch is expensive, but it's pretty fun wandering through the souvenirs and looking at the memorabilia. Not a lot of great restaurants in the area. I always tell people to make a point of going to Mias, both for the brisket tacos and for the DC history of the place. I think there was a more detailed thread about previous camp experiences at the 'Nard (you have to call it that, by the way) if you look through the archives.

Now that makes more sense!

I live in Calabasas, no too far from Oxnard. You really want to plan a few things out.

My recommendation is to drive PCH from Oxnard to Malibu, check out Point Dune, Paradise Cove, and eat at a beach restaurant between Malibu and Santa Monica. Venice beach is another 7-8 miles down PCH, its great for people watching, but not as "clean" (i.e. the smell of patchouli is everywhere). Still fun with Muscle Beach, street performers, etc. Do the beach on a weekday. PCH will be a parking lot on Saturday and 11-2 on Sunday. If you want great Mountain, ocean views, drive up Los Flores from PCH to the 101 (which puts you back to Oxnard quicker.

Disneyland is 2 hours away. in Anaheim, there are many things to do in OC, Knotts Berry Farm, Beaches etc. San Diego is only another hour and you have Lego Land and Sea World, but that gets you real far away from Oxnard). There is also Magic Mountian which I think is the best Amusement Park

As for LA, Hollywood and Highland is a very tourist area and they have really cleaned up that part of Hollywood. Alot to do in LA - Universal City (City Walk), Burbank Studios, Sunset Strip, Rodeo, BH, Bel Air, etc. Not too far from Oxnard - the traffic is what you have to plan around.

Shoot me a PM if you want, I can give you a couple of good eating places and maybe some ideas based on what you want to do/see.

I'll be going to camp as well, but havent set a date

Here's one thing you gotta do. Just stand there and feel how unbelievably beautiful the weather is every single day. In the middle of one of the most brutal heat waves ever recorded, it will be 70's in the day high 50's at night and no humidity.

One thing that surprised me when I moved to CA, the beaches are awesome but the water is COLD. I left Florida where the Gulf is 86 in August so it was an eye opener to say the least - give the kids a heads up.

If you have a day to just drive go up past San Luis Obispo and just get on the 1. You've never seen anything like the 1 going past Los Padres national forest up towards Big Sur. Probably the best drive in America? Prepare to see things like this pretty much nonstop;

Def make time to drive up and down the PCH, best drive in America IMO. Your main problem yall will face is traffic. Just because SD is an hour away from LA, doesn't mean you will actually get there in an hour. Last september, me and the wife drove up from SD to LAX on a thursday. We left SD at 11 am and arrived at the airport at 10pm (only 1 stop for a fast lunch).

As someone mentioned, hit Magic Mountain instead of Disneyland, it is a great park. If you do decide to go to SD, I recommend the Wild Safari park or the zoo.

I will be there the next weekend and plan on seeing the LeJoya (sp?) tar pits in downtown LA and take in a game at Chavez Ravine, always wanted to see a game there. Of course I will be wearing a catchers mask and a bullet-proof vest upon my arrival into the parking lot after the game :)

Wild hair of an idea, but somebody with talent should make a CZ tshirt or hat that we can buy prior to camp so we can recognize other 'Zoners when we're in a Cowboys environment. It could be something as simple as a Cafe Press job. I've been to the 'Nard (that's what we're calling it) a couple of times, and I bet dozens of you were there and I just never knew to say 'hi.'

Games have major police presence and much nicer now that Magic (et al)has taken over ownership

An hour away? SD is around 130 miles from LA.

La Brea Tar Pits (La Jolla is something else). The Tar Pits are right next door to LACMA (LA County Museum of Art) - very easy to take in both in one trip. Definitely get to a Dodgers game if you can - the stadium is one of the older ones, but it's held up well.

For the OP, make (free) reservations in advance to go to the Getty Villa. It's in Malibu, right on your drive down the PCH from Oxnard, and it's well worth seeing. The new Getty Museum is also pretty great.

With kids the age of yours, be sure to get a Park Hopper at Disneyland so you can also go to California Adventure across the way.

If you're staying up near Oxnard, take a day and head up to Santa Barbara. Oh, and you can head up into the Santa Ynez valley to visit wineries as well.

Enjoy!

Cut me some slack, recently moved to Cali, heh

An hour away from north SD to the very south of LA maybe driving 80mph with no traffic. I just know it isn't as close as it seems.

Only thing I can say with certainty is do not miss driving along the 1 :)

Keep the info coming folks. Much appreciated. I'm taking notes. :D

I am sure Training Camp will almost be Disneyland considering all the extra non needed crap Jerry will have around the Camp. It's way too over packed now and just not as much fun as it used to be 10 years ago or so.

But, that's just me. Sounds like you have a fun trip planned out for your family.

It's summer too, doesn't matter weekday or weekend, Disneyland and the beach will be packed beyond belief.

Have at it and good luck.
