GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers cornerback Al Harris has played in four games against Terrell Owens, starting three.
Owens and Harris’ teams split the four games. Owens had 30 receptions for 440 yards and five touchdowns in his four meetings against Harris, while Harris made 12 tackles with a sack and four passes defensed.
“The guy is a good player,” said Harris, who was traded from Philadelphia to Green Bay before the 2003 season. “As soon as you turn on the tape, you can see that. Both of us are confident guys, and we like to compete.”
Harris can’t remember the last time he covered Owens man-to-man. When Owens torched the Packers for 161 yards and a touchdown on eight catches in the Eagles’ 47-17 victory in 2004, Harris said Green Bay played zone against Owens.
“I got in trouble in that game,” Harris said. “A couple times we were in zone, and I was playing man, and coach [Mike] Sherman, he was hot with me.
“Man(-to-man) is my game, but whatever defense is called, you have to play it.”
Harris and Charles Woodson, who is hoping to play despite a toe injury, form the most physical cornerback duo in the league. Carolina’s Drew Carter is the only receiver with a 100-yard game against the Packers this season. He had five catches for 132 yards and a touchdown in Green Bay’s 31-17 victory over the Panthers on Nov. 18.
Detroit Lions receiver Roy Williams had only three receptions for 32 yards in the Packers’ 37-26 victory on Thanksgiving Day.
No returns for Woodson
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that, although Charles Woodson might play in Thursday’s game, Woodson won’t be the punt returner. Woodson injured the big toe on his right foot in the Thanksgiving Day victory over the Detroit Lions.
Tramon Williams, who returned a pooch punt 94 yards for a touchdown against Carolina, is expected to take Woodson’s place. Cornerback Will Blackmon, who is returning from a broken right foot that has kept him out since Week 4, also has practiced returning punts this week.
Woodson has played in all 27 games of his Packers’ career, so they are hoping to have him in the starting lineup at cornerback.
“He’s played with injuries,” McCarthy said. “He was here last year and had two pretty significant injuries that he played through the whole year.
“He’s put a lot of time in the training room. Right now, he’s pretty much going around the clock, so we’ll see what happens. If someone can do it on our football team, it’d be Charles Woodson.”
Big game
Defensive end Aaron Kampman didn’t even let the questioner finish the sentence. “1990,” Hawk said.
That’s the last time two 10-1 teams met.
“It’s a big game,” said Kampman, who has 11 sacks this season. “I think you’d be foolish not to think about the fact that this has a lot of implications to it. Obviously, it’s one of 16, but because of the fact that we’ve both had so much success this year, it has some heightened significance.”
Packers coach Mike McCarthy told his team it was the “biggest game in the NFC this year.”
The winner will be the frontrunner to host the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 20.
