Packers telling players to show up for camp Saturday

7/19/2011 5:53:02 AM

Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee reports that two club sources confirmed Monday evening a report by ProFootballTalk.com that the defending Super Bowl champions have notified players to be ready to show up at Lambeau Field this weekend.

According to the two club sources, the players have been told to be ready to report to the facility for a meeting on Saturday. Players have been told that the doors at 1265 Lombardi Ave., which have been shuttered since the lockout began on March 11 – save for the brief lifting of the lockout during the draft – will open on Friday. The team will then have a meeting on Saturday in advance of training camp, which is scheduled to open on Saturday, July 30.

Three other players contacted Monday night said they had yet to hear from the team about a meeting, while safety Jarrett Bush said on his Twitter account that he had not received a call, either. But both sources re-confirmed that the calls had been made, and later Monday night another player said that he had been contacted by a member of the personnel staff. That player was asked if he needed help making travel arrangements to arrive in town on Friday in advance of Saturday's meeting.

Technically, teams are not supposed to have any contact with players while the lockout is still ongoing, but if the Packers violated that rule to inform the players of Saturday’s meeting, they’re likely not the only ones to do so.

Everyone except Rodgers

Just as labor clarity seems to be coming into place, things are really getting confusing. With many people of the belief that the lockout will end in a matter of days, ProFootballTalk.com actually reported Monday night that Green Bay Packers players have been told to be ready to report to the team this Saturday. One problem: Apparently, this is news to their starting quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.

“I definitely haven’t been contacted about anything in gb this weekend, for the record,” Rodgers tweeted late last night. Are the Packers trying to tell him something? Do they think they don’t need Rodgers to repeat in 2011? Um, we’ll assume that’s not the case.

It will be interesting how the NFL handles this type of communication.

And we will know because not a lot of players make Green Bay their all year home.

PFT has gotten some nice play on the ESPN family of networks today, thanks to our Monday night report that the Packers are contacting players and advising them to be ready to show up for a team meeting on Saturday. Surely fueling the decision to credit our report is the fact that Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee quickly confirmed it as “100 percent” accurate, citing two unnamed team sources in support of his assertion.

But given that the league has yet to give the green light to the Green and Gold (or anyone else for that matter) to contact players, the Packers understandably are now hastily trying to put the Cheez Whiz back in the tube.

Of course you have .. even more PFT rumor crap republished as news elsewhere is something to be proud of ..

It's the media's version of Punk'd .. maybe that's what the "P" in PFT really stands for ..
