In 2010, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers were ranked first and second defensively in points allowed. The Dallas Cowboys were ranked 31st in that category. Last season, Pittsburgh was ranked 12th overall in points scored, Green Bay was 10th and Dallas was seventh. (Note: For a complete listing of all teams, click here for offensive and defensive rankings in these categories).

While the Cowboys defense did struggle last season and must be improved upon, an opponent's offense will attempt to score as often as necessary regardless of the defense they are facing. How well an opponent can score against a defense is usually (although not always) indicative of how good their offense is.

Below is a snapshot of how well the last Super Bowl winner's, Super Bowl runnerup's and Wade Phillips/Jason Garrett's defenses fared in the win/loss column versus teams with offenses equal to or better statistically than their own during the regular season:

Interesting. I would eliminate the week 17 Eagles game from the stats as an outlier though.

The data is derived from the entire season. Why would the week 17 game constitute as a point separate from the rest?

Because that team of backups Philly ran out there wasn't the #3 offense in the league.

Interesting. If only we had won as many games as Pittsburgh and Green Bay

I'll never understand the point of threads like this

True enough. Doomsay is correct.

I know exactly what you mean. Why didn't I simply post another *****-and-moan thread which appeals to some so much?

Bad DE. Bad! :banghead:

It is an interesting comparison, and a welcome relief from Dez Bling and disrispet'n Romo threads, thanks DE.

You're welcome Doomsay. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna start a half dozen Dallas Sucks threads. Reality will be so proud. I'm the best mod ever! :D

Shut up Yeager! :)

So if i use some simple math, this would tell me that Dallas was 3-7 against opponents with offenses ranked lower then them. Not sure what that exactly means, lol.

Right now, I'm not finding that so very surprising.

It means that defense was as bad as it looked. 31st in points allowed could not stop a nose bleed and it wasnt just the scheme.

It's absurd to try to pretend otherwise. Even after Garrett took over.

Regardless of what criteria you want to use, Indy and Washington lit the Cowboys' defense up in games we won. The Cowboys' D achieved the near-impossible in making Rex Grossman look like an all-pro.

Philly struggled to 400 yds and 30 points.

:laugh2: at using the 2nd Philly game to show anything other than our starters - mostly in vacation mode - were marginally better than Philly's 2nd and 3rd stringers.

You're right. B&Ming is ingrained in some.

Question. Did I attempt to dispute the defense needing improvement?

You're a little late. Doomsay and Chocolate Lab beatcha to it. ;) That is if you can read further into the thread. :)

Anyone up for a game of Rebus?

Haha, i actually had to do the equation on paper before posting it and still got it wrong. I think i forgot our record. Thank goodness for Google spelling and my little widget calculator. If only i could find something to help with grammer.

I'm baffled by the complaints over this thread.

Essentially, DE is saying that, against teams with better offenses, the Cowboys performed just as well as both Super Bowl contestants. Furthermore, all of the Cowboys' wins (with respect to this particular stat) occurred during the Jason Garrett era when the Cowboys went 3-1 (or 2-1 if you choose to omit the second Philly game -- which is a reasonable approach).

I wouldn't extrapolate any profound meaning from this, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Not that I'm advocating ***** and moan threads, but the "look how close we were to the best teams in football in [/insert random stat here]" arent any better.

Green Bay and Pittsburgh made the Superbowl. We went 6-10. Hopefully Jason Garrett can change that. Threads like this serve only to try and justify failure, regardless of how much silver lining can be drawn from said failure. The second half the season gave reason for optimism, but the fact that we were similar to GB and Pitt in some meaningless stat means less than nothing.
