NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones bought a full-page newspaper advertisement to print an open letter in which he promised to regain the trust of his team and fans.

In the ad in the sports section of Friday's editions of The Tennessean -- Nashville's daily newspaper -- Jones told his family, coaches, teammates and Titans fans he must reorganize his priorities.

"In the past few weeks, I have learned a lifetime of lessons," the letter states.

Jones writes of hoping to not only meet, but exceed the expectations people have of him.

"The first step in meeting these goals is for me to stop making the poor choices that have put me in this position," the letter reads.

Jones said he plans to appeal his season-long suspension by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the same person who will hear that appeal. Cincinnati receiver Chris Henry, a teammate of Jones at West Virginia, also was suspended. But Henry received an eight-game ban.

In his letter, Jones said his attorneys advised him to appeal the suspension to "clarify some of the facts and address the unprecedented punishment that was imposed." Jones first announced his intention of appealing last week.

His attorneys had declined to comment since Jones' announcement he would appeal except to promise that a statement was coming. The appeal must be filed by April 30.

Jones said he plans to re-enroll at West Virginia University and finish his degree.

The sixth pick overall in the 2005 draft and the first defensive player taken that year, Jones has talked with police 10 times since being drafted, and been arrested five times. He has not been convicted of any charge since being drafted.

Goodell left open the chance for Jones' return after the Titans' 10th game if he meets a list of stringent requirements. That included staying out of "adverse" involvement with police and putting together a plan of community service the NFL must approve.

But Las Vegas police want to charge Jones for inciting a fight at a strip club on Feb. 19 that led to a triple shooting. Jones also did not inform the Titans of two arrests in Georgia last year, and a felony obstruction charge for allegedly biting a Fayetteville, Ga., police officer was delayed until May.

Titans owner Bud Adams has said team officials weren't sure they want Jones back unless he changes his behavior and avoids controversy off the field. Titans coach Jeff Fisher didn't want to talk about Jones during a radio interview Friday morning.

"We've moved on. I have moved on," Fisher said.

Funny thing about West Virginia.

I am about the same age as these guys. My senior year in HS, WVU was recruiting a player who played RB/WR/WB in our Wing T offense. Guy was great, but a complete headcase. Legal problems even in HS, no academic caring (he slept during the ACTs while we took them).

I see that they recruit real winners.

Good for Mr. Jones. Talk is cheap, but it's a step at least. Taking this action definitely signifies he's at least aware that he needs to change.

Whodathought Jones could use language this good. I mean, it's as if a professional wrote the ad.
I guess going to college really did teach Pacman a thing or two in the English language.
My hat is off to you, Pacman.

PACMAN TAKES OUT A FULL-PAGE AD

Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has taken out a full-page ad (at the low-low cost of $81,000, paid in ones) in the Nashville Tennessean to express (*sniff*) sorrow and (*honk*) regret for the actions (*fart*) that resulted in his one-season suspension from the NFL.

We'd be slightly more charitable in our assessment of this development if it wasn't obvious to us (and anyone with an ounce of common sense) that Pacman contributed as much to the drafting of his letter as he did to the writing of the Bible.

In our opinion, which is based on our knowledge of Mr. Jones and the content of the letter he "wrote," it's obvious that a lawyer or a P.R. specialist crafted the thing.

The giveaway is the semicolon in the last paragraph. Does Pacman Jones use a semicolon? Heck, he probably thinks the word refers to a medical condition. :laugh2:

In our opinion, this is a too little, too late effort by Jones to make amends with the citizens of Nashville -- and a too little, too late effort to reverse the damage to his interests that occurred a week ago, when he announced plans to appeal his suspension.

He now says that "my attorneys have advised me to appeal the suspension," so that he can "clarify some of the facts and address the unprecedented punishment that was imposed." Attention Pacman (and whoever it is that wrote the letter): Let it go. The Commish won't be changing his mind.

The letter, which is addressed to "My Family, My Coaches and Teammates and Our Fans" begins with an acknowledgement of his mistakes. He then speaks of reorganizing his priorities. He admits that the suspension was "due to my own actions."

He also explains that he plans to re-enroll at West Virginia University (my house is officially for sale) and finish his degree.

At WVU, Jones intends to establish a scholarship that will be awarded to a walk-on player chosen by the football staff. (We're not fluent in the specifics of the NCAA regulations, but we've got a feeling that the limit on scholarships can't be circumvented by a booster who chooses to finance the education of someone who doesn't get one of the available scholarships. But we appreciate the effort to help improve our Mountaineers.)

All sarcasm aside, we generally are encouraged by the letter. And if the person(s) who wrote it is/are in a position to influence his behavior over the next several months, there might be a glimmer of hope for a cause that otherwise seems lost.

UPDATE: A reader has pointed out to us the irony of the date of Jones' letter: April 20. As in 4/20. Apparently, the number "420" has significance in the marijuana culture. You can Google "420" or click here for more. We're not saying that Jones smokes marijuana. But, given some of his past incidents, 4/20 might not have been the ideal date for taking out the ad.

SECOND UPDATE: Several readers believe that Jones specifically picked "4/20" as an implicit "F/U" to the league and to anyone who has criticized him. Also, another reader points out that Jones never once apologizes for his actions in his letter. Good catch. We're glad that our readers can indeed read. At times, we sure as hell can't.

I wonder how he paid for the ad - did he walk into the newspaper editor's office and throw a garbage bag full of money up in the air?

His PR people and attorneys are working feverishly to clean up his image. How many people actually believe he wrote that open letter? I know I don't believe it for a second. We'll see if he could live up to that open letter, at this point, I think most of us very skeptical but only time will tell.

I'm still wondering why he wasn't charged with assult after he slammed stripper's head on the dance floor.

He can appeal all he wants. No court is going to support him- not with his record. He will probably get a tough judge who will look at him and say"If you had come before me with this kind of record, you would be 75 before you got out."

Pacman should have bought a full page ad in the USA Today! It's still not going to change a thing until he has time to prove his intentions...

This is damage control at it's finest...he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar...NOW he wants to clean it up?

Hey, Pacman...join Vick and throw $81,000 into the Virginia Tech fund...!

I wonder if he feels that the Titans "need more thugs on the team" now?
