Pacman's lawyer says the $20,000 has been paid

So the debt has been paid which is a good thing, but having to even ask the question of why it wasn't paid sooner is still a problem in my opinion.

Knowing his life is under mass scrutiny right now Pacman should not be letting issues as large as these come to a head. No matter what has to happen the guy has to learn better ways to handle his business in a manner so that no newspaper can throw up a headline which makes the NFL and it's players look bad.

If he doesn't start doing that ASAP I fear Roger Goodell won't reinstate him because he is going to be under the impression that Pacman is still a nuisance.

Oh that silly Pacman Jones!

Maybe he didn't have the money

Maybe there was an agreement in place that he would pay once he got back playing

Until we know the full story blaming Pacman is just silly

Thanks for the update. The good thing is that his transgressions all stem from the past. He's still trying to make up for those mistakes, but he hasn't gotten into any trouble lately. Of course the clock is still ticking.

Dallas Cowboys' Pacman Jones sends check to pay off $20,000 Las Vegas debt

01:41 PM CDT on Friday, May 23, 2008
By ALBERT BREER / The Dallas Morning News
abreer@***BANNED-URL***

Suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Pacman Jones sent a check to a Las Vegas casino Friday to pay off a $20,000 gambling debt from last September, according to his agent, Manny Arora.

Jones received a $10,000 marker and two $5,000 markers last year, which serve as lines of credit in a casino, at Caesar's Palace. As Arora explained it, the non-payment of those are akin to defaulting on a loan, with the District Attorney's office serving as a sort of collection agency.

In Friday's Las Vegas Sun, Chief Deputy District Attorney Bernie Zadrowski of Clark County in Nevada said he's requested for felony theft and fraud charges to be filed against Jones because of the non-payment. Jones' camp has been in constant contact with the DA's office since, according to Arora, who added that once debts are paid, these cases typically dropped. Jones will receive $100,000 advance on his 2008 salary with the Cowboys, but can't get it until he is reinstated.

Arora said a recent case involving former NBA star Charles Barkley, and $400,000 in markers, is likely the reason this case became so public.

"It's a non-story," Arora said. "I think if this hadn't happened recently with some famous ex-athletes, I don't think this would've even popped up over $20,000."

Arora added that he "would hope this would not be a problem with the league."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said he will review Jones' status prior to training camp. Jones said on Sunday that he hoped to speak with Goodell this week regarding reinstatement. Arora declined to say whether or not that has happened.

The league is aware of the latest Las Vegas matter, and plans to look into it.

"We're aware of it and we're looking into it." NFL vice president of public relations Greg Aiello said. When asked if this affect Jones' status, Aiello responded that, "We're not in a position to know yet, and we won't be until we get all the facts."

I wonder why his agent didn't just pay thing months ago. Manny stands to gain MUCH more than 20K if Pacman can play.

It is obvious that Pacman needs a "handler". Manny should have found that person months ago.

It seems to me, without researching further, that the prosecutor would have a pretty tough case here. I could be way off base, but I think they'd have to prove that he had the intent to deprive them of their money at the time it was borrowed. That was most likely not the case, as he probably had ample money at the time and fully intended to repay it. It's just a simple case of him not repaying borrowed money and therefore defaulting on the loan -- which they'd have to sue for in civil court, not criminal.

What does trouble smell like? When you have to tell someone to do something rather than them doing it themselves.

What this tells me is, he still thinks there are things he can *just get away with*.

My son does things to my wife (his mother) because she lets him get away with him. Every once in awhile he will test me to see if he can get away with something and I bring the hammer down and he doesn't try again for awhile.

The point is, if it's not NFL related, he still seems to think it doesn't matter and he can get away with it.

The questions is, what will he try to get away with next?

I get the sense that Pacman has a cash flow problem. I know that's probably a shocker.

Looks like the ball is in Goodell's court now.

Cinsidering the time frame this event took place, I can't see this changing anything.

After all, Pacman is a good little angel now......right?

Intresting take.

A guy doesn't pay money, so he's trying to get away with something

Great logic

Sounds about right... But it wouldn't surprise me in the least for there to be special laws in Vegas regarding this exact sort of thing and making it criminal.

Passing a bad check, which is how this county sees this issue, is a criminal act and he could be arrested. Arora says this is the only place in the country where they can call up the DA and request the arrest warrant. Says the casino's are that poweful out there.

Charles Barkley had to cough up $400,000 plus $40,000 cost of court to avoid criminal charges that he would have faced if he had not paid his outstanding gambling debt.

Great logic

The logic is that he took out the markers.

The logic is that they were his responsibility.

The logic is that the 90 days he had to pay the debt was past due.

It's his job to make sure these things are taken care of and he waited until he was threatened with being criminally charged to make the payment.

It's simple. Pacman has to take care of business and he didn't do that.

If he didn't have the 'cash' to do so then sell a car or ask a friend for a loan or get a job or etc, etc, etc.

There is no valid excuse for this BS from him. If he found a way to pay it today then I am sure he could have found a way to pay it 24 hours ago before it became a national news story.

He never disputed that he owed the debt or anything like that. I kind of wish he had because just not paying it until this happens makes him look like more of a dope.

Stop trying to use the excuse of 'it's only a story because it's Pacman'.

We are way past that point with this guy. Now we are at a point where he has to understand that anything will be a story 'because it's Pacman' and therefore you do not give anyone anything that even remotely looks like it has legs to even be a story.

And trust me, him being looked at by the D.A. for possible criminal charges is indeed a story because if it happens then he won't be playing football for the Dallas Cowboys in 2008 whether you agree with that decision or not.

DA: Pacman Jones will likely be cleared if payment's made

Albert Breer http://www.***BANNED-URL***/blogs/images/email-icon.jpg E-mail http://www.***BANNED-URL***/blogs/images/email-icon.jpg News tips

Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney Bernie Zadrowski just told me that if Pacman Jones pays off the $20,000 in three markers he owes to Harrah's, the case will likely be dropped.

No charges have been filed, but Zadrowski moved to file felony theft and fraud charges. Notarized letter's have been sent to Jones, but so long as the debt's paid, the matter will be dismissed.

"I will generally dismiss those types of cases [once the debt is paid], and just because he's a public figure won't change any of that," Zadrowski said. "Generally speaking, I will treat Adam Jones the same way I treat everyone who writes a bad check or marker."

The $20,000 debt is from September, seven months after the strip-club shooting incident happened.

UPDATE (3:13 p.m.): District David Roger just called back, and agreed with Zadrowski's assessment, with one caveat -- Since Jones is part of a pending case, as a witness in the nightclub shooting incident, this could be a little different than the normal unpaid marker case.

"He's entered a plea, and he's been told to stay out of trouble," Roger said. "I don't know that this is going to cause him an issue, but generally these cases are dismissed."
