This is exactly why humanity is racing downhill these days. The crowning achievement of the average person today is either A) watching at least 4 hours a day of trash reality TV or B) Playing 4+ hours of games a day.

George Washington said after staying in New York City for a year after becoming President that his health deteriorated at an extreme pace while there. He said this was because he couldn't get any exercise because he would be mobbed if he went outside.

When they moved the capital to Philadelphia (prior to moving it to Washington DC) he intentional obtained a large farm outside of the city so that he could work the farm giving him the exercise required to keep himself healthy. Subsequently, his health dramatically improved.

I suggest turning off American Idol and finding something productive and healthy to do instead.

Following your advice, and your Washington story...I suggest you move from NYC or change your username, it might change your award winning personality for the better. :

First off that is an instant classic. Loved it.

But more to the point it's funny you mention that as a plant. These entire first few shows, where they show these bad singers, is all BS for television.

I've known a few people who've gone through the process of trying to get on this show. The thing about this whole deal is that these folks they show on TV, at these live additions, is not the first time they've been in front of people. It's the first time they're in front of Simon and Crew but to even get a chance to be at one of these auditions you first have to go through another set, to basically qualify, in order to do them.

Meaning that other people intentionally pick these piss poor singers to go onto the auditions that will then be shown on TV.

The friends who went through it told me that you'll be sitting around there and folks that could sing pretty good, not great and probably wouldn't have made the show, will often get passed over in order to send a really piss poor singer just so they'll have someone to laugh at on these first few episodes of the season.


It doesn't change the fact that it's humorous but it's not as funny to me now, as it used to be, knowing that these people go through other auditions being allowed to think they've got a shot when in reality they're only being brought in to be brutally beaten down by Simon and Company so that the TV show can have funny segments on their shows.


Before I'd known that stuff I always wondered how these peoples family members could let them try out for this stuff, cause they have to know they're not good (And I still don't get why they allow it to happen honestly) but knowing that producers, or whatever, of this show actually fuel these delusions by allowing them to even get through one audition is really sad.


Now the couple of friends I've had who tried this are both ok singers. They're easy to listen to but they weren't likely to ever be selected to go to Hollywood anyway, it would have been an extreme long shot for them so it really didn't bug them not to be chosen they just always told me it was funny to them that this was intentionally done.

oh, i'm sure a lot of people are plants to just look silly/stupid on tv. but if some of those people actually think they can sing - they need a good reality check for sure.

I agree. I'm a hostile, unfriendly and aloof.

I believe it stems from being shy as a kid and living in a bad area. I generally didn't start trouble and tried to avoid it for safety reasons. There was a point in the early 90s that I got so beaten down with people attempting to take advantage of me or people I knew, that I started bluntly telling people what I thought and refusing to accept any bull**** they were trying dish. It was a huge fundamental change in my personality. In person, people tend to back down when they are aware that their **** wasn't going to fly with me. For the most part, people just wanted to impart their will on others, but if they can't, they leave. On the Internet, they think they are no risks. Of course they are wrong, but I need not explain that to you I'm sure.

Anyway, while it made me a much happier person overall, (dispatching of ***holes) it definitely made me a much more abrasive personality when in disagreement with someone.

Moving away from NYC, might be in my future. Though, I had this personality from living in Dallas / Fort Worth area, not here. I find people in Dallas far more obnoxious compared to people in Manhattan. (not sure about the outer NYC burrows)

Anyway, for the most part I have been trying to be more agreeable. At least to those not seeking controversy. I mean, I'm not actually a bad guy.

We all got a good chuckle Wednesday out of General Larry Platt and his Pants on the Ground song. Entertaining as he was, I couldn't help but wonder why the American Idol producers saved the last spot of the show for a 62-year-old guy with a funny song.

Now I think I know.

Take a look at the photograph on the home page of the Civil Rights Veterans Movement website. See the young man on the left, looking directly into the camera? That's Larry Platt, age 16.

"We had come by bus in 1963 to a church in Savannah, Georgia to plan a march to desegregate the city," Platt writes. "Reverend Hosea Williams and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were our leaders. That particular planned march was canceled and we were singing to raise our spirits before returning home."

Platt worked with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Georgia, organizing sit-ins in the South.

He was beaten during the Bloody Sunday march from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery.

He got his nickname, "General," from the Rev. Hosea Williams because of his heroic efforts on behalf of the civil-rights movement.

The Georgia General Assembly proclaimed Sept. 4, 2001, Larry Platt Day in Atlanta, because of "his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia."

He remains a community activist in the Atlanta area and recently has become known for publicly protesting foreclosures.


If anybody in that Atlanta crowd deserved his 15 minutes of fame on national television, it was Larry Platt.

When he tells you to get your pants off the ground, you'd best listen.
