Parcells as GM (he tried in NY, maybe Dallas)?

Thought it kind of strange that retired head coach Bill Parcells is interviewing Jason Garrett for some coaching capacity. What? Parcells interviewing??? Makes ya wonder. Is he just sticking around just to clean out his office? Obviously not. He has agreed to assist Jerry in some capacity for at least this weeks. So he is helping find his replacement. How many retiring coaches do this? Why would he not just up and leave?

You could say he is just being a friend to Jones and helping him find a coach for next year and the future. However, with the recent story of Parcells requesting the GM job of the NY Giants, it made me think... What if Jerry asked Bill to stay to help out, but not just for a couple weeks -- but for good. Could it be Jerry has offered him the GM position? The position Bill reportedly wanted to have in New York?

Garrett, who turns 41 in March, spent all day Wednesday at Valley Ranch, meeting with both team owner Jerry Jones and his son, Stephen, along with former head coach Bill Parcells, who has remained in his office this week despite announcing his retirement from coaching Monday morning.[/i]

Key phrase: "retired from coaching"

I know this is a stretch, at least at first. I'm just throwing it out there.

Parcells as a general manager might not be a bad idea. I don't think his talent evaluation was outstanding, but he had some success. He did bring some good coaches to Dallas, and he provided some good organization.

Why would parcells want to live in Dallas and be a gm?

His whole life is in ny, and now Saratoga.

No need for him to be that far away. He will probably end up with an nbc gig and enjoy his home near the track and the greatness of the saratoga performing arts center.

Im sure Jerry still respects BP opinion and asked him to give his input. Sounds like a good move by Jerry to me but I wouldnt read anything more then that into it. Like it or not Jerry will be the GM of this team for a long, long time.

He said he doesn't want to do the 24/7 grind as HC and still loves football. He also said he retired from coaching football, not from football. I think it would be wise for Jerry to hire Bill as the GM. That way there would be a buffer between Jones and the coaching staff. Genius!

What life? I thought football was his life. :laugh2:

I doubt it's going to happen, but Parcells as a consultant is not a bad idea. He does know football.

genius...was the insult needed.

My simple point is, he wouldnt want to live here. If he were going to take a position like that it would be with the jets where he has a good relationship with brian tannebaum and it is about a 2.5 to 3.5 hour ride from saratoga.

I dont think he wants to be that far away from his family or his home.

He is a northeast guy, that is where his kids are and his friends.

Saratoga is a really great place to be also.

The thing about him being GM, or at least some sort of advisor or something, is that he can spend a lot of time in NY or wherever he wants, and not have that 12-month commitment that he would have as HC.

I think he will be named GM. But its still low in possibility. But I have this hunch. I love all the wordplay. Parcells has retired from "coaching". And he's still here interviewing and stuff. Who knows. I wouldn't be against it at all.

Right. And I think he tried to do the GM thing with NY first, and that didn't work, so Dallas had to be on his list of teams he'd be interested in being a part of, seeing as how he has put the team together over the past 4 years.

There's no way that Jerry Jones will make Parcells GM of the Cowboys cause that's Jerry's job and gives him creditability/limelight in the NFL world. I do think it entirely possibly that Parcells could officially be designated as something like an executive consultant to the Cowboys or even deputy GM so Jones and Cowboys could take advantage of his assessment of players in the draft, etc. Parcells actually has a good record in drafting good players--much better then many give him credit for. Parcells certainly could slow down Jones love affair with certain players when it's not warranted & he could work closely with Ireland and also help Garrett to develop understanding of what to look for in future drafts.

He could also offer lot of advice on running a team, coaching staff, etc. and kinda be a confidential mentor of whatever w/o spending loads of time in Dallas and presumably Jones would be willing fork out some money to do this. Yes I know Parcells might be interested in similar relationship with a NY team but maybe neither of them have come calling plus Parcells has spent 4 years with the Cowboys & certainly knows a lot about them.

As for Gibbs, why would we be interested in him? If we are staying with the 3-4 then let's bring in a legit 3-4 coach who can develop that system to the point other 3-4 teams play. If we going back to 4-3, then I guess it makes sense but frankly I'm getting a quesy feeling in my stomach that Jerry is going to run this team again w/o a powerful HC to whom he felt he has to defer. Does anybody really believe he can't control Garret and will run this team into the ground again? Sorry, but while hiring Garrett as OC now is okay I guess, I got a real problem if Gibbs comes back. I want a real DC (like Wade Phillips or his assistant) or maybe Pepper Martin the LB coach with the Pats.

You mean the Guinness commercial? The phrase is "Brilliant!", not Genius.. I think he was agreeing with the original post.

I sorta think he's going through the motions and may stay on in some sort of capacity... perhaps as GM. I joked about this on the day he quit when they said he was still hanging around but this would actually be a very good thing for Dallas. For that very reason it'll probably never happen.

Nice, in the old days the rich folks from NYC would have houses in Saratoga and rides up to their summer on yatchs. Its the gateway to the Adirondacks, nice area.

Did Jerry Jones die? Because that's the only way he's given up the GM job. Bottom line is the Cowboys are the new Oakland Raiders. Jones will continue to drive this once proud franchise into the ground because his giant ego won't allow him to put a structure in place made up of good football people. Instead, virtually every decision is made by him and his son. You need football people around to help build a successful NFL team year in and year out. The Cowboys don't have that in place and never will as long as Jones is in control. I've rooted for Dallas for 25 years and will continue to do so. However, I feel that the way they do business will prevent them from winning another Super Bowl for many more years. I'm afraid the Cowboys will be like the Raiders where they go 25-30 years without winning a championship. I hope I'm wrong and they win it next year but that's I how I feel.

I wasn't insulting anyone, just saying that it would be genius of Jerry to say, "Ok BP, you got us this far as coach, take us the rest of the way as GM." Hope there weren't any feeling hurt, not that I really care.:D
