Will the 2006 Cowboys be in the Super Bowl? Will they contend for the NFC East Title? Will they be in the playoffs? Will they have a winning record? Will they be better than the 2005 Cowboys?

No one knows the answer to these questions at this point in time, but if Coach Parcells retired then I think most of the NFL world would have said no to all of them. Now with him back the chance for a yes to any of those questions just increased dramatically.

Of course I am elated he's back because I believe in the team he is building in Dallas. The talent level looks to be better and in the last three seasons the team has 25 wins and 23 losses. That's the most wins in a three year period since back in the late 90's and the Cowboys only missed the playoffs in 2005 by one game. Skip the debate over which game they should have won for that to have happened, it's been done to death already.

Many of you can't stand the fact that he takes some time after the season to determine if he can come back and coach another season. For those of you that are 64 years old and work 8 to 15 hour days I am not talking to you guys because you probably already cut him some slack. For those of you who have a 64 year old person who is accessible please do the following. Go talk to them for three hours and watch how easily just talking to them for that three hours wears them out to the point of exhaustion. Now imagine multiplying that by five times and then by eight to ten months and you may understand why this man has to dig deep and ask himself, Is it worth it? There are going to be over 20 NFL coaches doing the exact thing Coach Parcells just did for a week and most of them are in there 30's, 40's and 50's.

Being a head coach in the NFL is one of the most demanding jobs in the world, not just this country, but in the world. Give the guy a break when he takes a few days to sit down after running the NFL marathon. Maybe he needed to think for a minute before he decides if he wants to do it all over again at his age with no guarantee of even finishing the damn thing, never mind winning it.

Ok, so now that he's back what does that mean for the Cowboys in 2006? The first thing it means is that the players let out a big sigh of relief that they don't have to learn a new system and get accustomed to a new head coach. The second thing it means is that the Cowboys should be better than 9-7. Here's a few reasons. The young players should be improved, there is a new draft class coming in and there will definitely be a few free agent signings. I know the pessimists out there are saying those things don't necessarily make the team better, but I am an optimist so I think otherwise. The third thing it means is that there will be higher expectations for this team before the 2006 season begins. Most people went into this past season thinking the Cowboys were going to improve on the 6-10 record of 2004 and they did just that by going 9-7. So now most people will be thinking the Cowboys go from 9-7 to maybe 11-5, 12-4 or even 13-3. I am one of those people. For now let's say 12-4 and an NFC East Title.

So in short. Coach Parcells deciding not to retire just got the Cowboys a 12-4 record and a spot in the 2006 playoffs. That's about all one can ask of any team in the NFL without sounding greedy. If you don't think this is a possibility then to you I say this. The 2005 Cowboys could have won three more games and we all know this is a fact. First Skins game, Seattle game and that Rams game would have been a whole different story had a playoff berth been on the line.

Coach Parcells will continue to improve this young, talented and hungry team in 2006. He chose to once again enter his name into the NFL marathon along with the rest of the Dallas Cowboys. Now let's just hope that someone with a big blue star on their helmet crosses the finish line first.

Go Cowboys.

I hope that everyone at Valley Ranch isn't thinking that we are just this close to being SuperBowl contenders. Needing at least 3 or 4 olinemen to either start or provide depth, a FS, at least 2 or 3 more LB's (Dat and Singleton are likely gone), a Kicker, and an aging WR corp and starting QB on hand doesn't sound like we are right at the edge to me. Hell, I'm not sold Julius Jones can be the man for an entire season.

Yes, we are improved, but this team could have just as easily lost 2 or 3 more games instead of winning them. We're a 9-7 team, barely over .500, and while we could hit the 12-4 mark next season we had better be as aggressive in FA and the draft as last season to get to that point. And that means not swinging and missing on the likes of Rivera.
