Cardinals' La Russa arrested on drunken driving suspicion

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was arrested Thursday for suspicion of drunken driving after police said they found him asleep inside his running sport utility vehicle at a stop light.
The 62-year-old La Russa gave two breath samples and was determined to have a blood alcohol content of 0.093 percent, Jupiter police said in a statement. Florida's legal driving limit is 0.08 percent.
Undercover officers first saw La Russa's SUV partly in an intersection around midnight and not moving despite several green lights, police said. Officers knocked on the vehicle's window and La Russa did not initially respond.
The SUV was in drive and running, with La Russa's foot on the brake, police said. When he eventually woke up, the officers asked him to get out of the car.
He was arrested and booked in the Palm Beach County jail on the misdemeanor about 4 a.m., according to police and jail records.
The Cardinals play spring training games at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

I wouldn't think a BAC of that level would cause him to pass out?!? Heck, the legal limit here in Texas use to be .10.

The whole "used to be" went right over my head.

Blame it on the lack of caffeine.:)

i don't like drunk drivers and would like to see more serious punishment then too much only slapping them on the wrist. When I was young and in my parents' car, a drunk driver ran a red light totaling my parents car. Neither my father nor I were injuried but my Mom's shoulder & arm were broken and she also had rib injury. The guy didn't even have car insurance.

Remember a few years ago Leonard Little (Rams?) got drunk and crashed his car into another car killing the woman driver. He didn't serve any jail time and don't remember what NFL did to him--think there was a suspension but the state didn't do anything (at least I don't recall they did).

No kidding!... And he was asleep long enough for a cop to see him and tap on the window? At a stoplight?

i had a dui 5 years ago coming home from a stones show at 2 am. i was .12.....a friend was supposed to drive for me but left the concert halfway through to go to strip club. 10 rows from the stage, i told him he was an arse and i was staying for the show. tried to wait long enough for the effects to wear off, finally left the lot when i felt ok and because i was the only car left and felt like i would get harassed for loitering. cop came up and was riding my arse at 2am so i changed lanes without a single to let him by thinking it was a bunch of trouble makers coming from a bar and looking for a fight. he immediately had me do a breathalizer which i failed. I thought that was dirty pool of them but guess they figured most people out that late on a w/e would have some alcohol on board.

But .10 is not much at all for someone who drinks on a regular basis. i dont drink and drive at all anymore, to be honest its because the law is very strict now in my state and it would be automatic jail time, probably a year for me. But i have always been one that would give up the keys if i felt unsteady, however at the same time i have driven hundreds of times with 4-6 beers in me and never had an accident or fender bender or anything while intoxicated because i know myself really well and know if i have control or not and i dont have any problem giving up the keys when i need to.

Its the people who wont ask for help when they are clearly not in condition to drive that screw it up for everyone and cause accidents. And nothing is going to change because bars still advertise and encourage you to attend happy hour to cram in a bunch of drinks right after work when prices are cheaper, and the bartenders dont stop you after 2 drinks which would be .08 for most persons, no they keep trying to sreve you more to increase the bill and their tip. Most people do not live in walking distance to the bars they frequent, so why will wnything stop.

Single people will go to the bars and clubs, have some drinks to chill out and have to drive home. The designated driver is BS because if someone does not like to drink they will not enjoy going to the bar. The only real solution i see is to force the bars to have some type of bus for locals or cab service to provide a way home for people drinking. they are the ones profiting off this and they charge so much more than what the alcohol really costs anyway.

As for me, i moved to a hip part of the city where there are many bars/restaraunts within walking distance, plus i have easy access to several forms of public transportation or can always get a cab really easy. If that wont work i make arrangements to stay with someone or make sure i have ride with someone before i even go out. But thats because i have to be very careful now. The average person drives to a bar and often drinks more than they planned on, then they are stuck, how are they going to get home, how will they get car home, etc. most people dont plan everything out, they just go.
