PARCELLS GETTING TOO CONSERVATIVE IN HIS OLD AGE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CRAYTON only calls for a fair catch now...never runs anything back...MEMO TO BILL...PUT NEWMAN IN THERE! BP: TOO CONSERVATIVE...DONT WANT HIM TO GET HURT...YOU CANT HIDE PEOPLE...NEWMAN PROBABLY WOULD HAVE HAD 2 OR 3 TD'S BY NOW!

THOMPSON only runs right to the 30 and falls down..no moves..no cuts..

JULIUS before the injury just went for the sure yardage...he went from a homerun hitter to a singles hitter...our only sure weapon was decimated!

BLEDSOE has only been ALLOWED to open the throttle TWO TIMES ALL YEARS...RESULT: DESTRUCTION WHY NOT DO IT MORE? HE'S NO VINNIE!

PLAYERS LIKE keyshawn promote conservatism...only being able to inch down the field...

I FOR ONE am tired of mr. conservative...that's his new name in my book..pete rose was mr. hustle...from this day forth PARCELLS will be known as mr. conservative...what a joke....bledsoe is not vinnie...julius is not tham...and our defense is not the 1986 GIANTS! TIME TO OPEN IT UP...HEY BP I HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR YOU....IF YOU OPEN IT UP AND GET UP 21 THEN ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GO CONSERVATIVE AND YOU WILL WIN...but if you play conservative they will always know your next move and it will backfire...you cant play the whole game in prevent!

So you are saying Parcells tells them to fair catch? As an aside, Newman has returned punts but I wouldn't want him to do it all time as I like having a shutdown corner on the field not on crutches.

i guarantee you he tells them anything even remotely close call for the fair catch...he has definitely told thompson to run to the 35 and fall down...he hasnt gotten past there in a long long time....what a joke...we are losing yardage that we need! especially with flo gone!

Just so you know ... 30 yards a kickoff return is very good. But hey, thanks to your post I've wasted 20 seconds of my life I'll never get back.

thompson is ranked 35th in the NFL for average yards per gain....i would rather have someone back there that can take it to the house...AND could get to the 35...thanks for wasting 10 secs of my life!

He's actually 14th, but don't let that stop your rant.

First of all, average-yards-per-gain is a made-up statistic.
Thompson is 14th in the league, in terms of average yards per return, anyway.

I agree the Thompson returns frustrate me at times but think about it from more of a logical standpoint. You can tell Thompson is being told to stay behind his wall of blockers until the main rush hits. This accomplishes two things .. first, it keeps the average starting position on kickoffs at least around the 25-30 yard line which is very decent and second, it provides a chance for a long return every so often, even if rare, if a hole opens up. Thompson has the speed to take it the distance if he gets a step on the coverage team.

Take Dante Hall during the last game for example. The first couple of kickoffs he broke off nice returns. The rest of the game his returns were sporadic with several ending around or behind the 20 yard line. Now, his overall average may turn out to be better than Thompson's, but even the best kickoff returners in the league are typically only going to score 1-2 touchdowns per year.

Other things to keep in mind is that a lot of great returns happen because of illegal blocks and are called back. If Thompson is getting the ball to the 30 yard line consistently, even a 15 yard penalty allows you to start at the 15 yard line which gives you the ability to use your entire playbook. The blocking style the Cowboys use helps to keep potential penalties further up field. With a freelance returner like Dante Hall penalties tend to happen much closer to the end zone. If the spot of the penalty occurs inside the 20 yard line (most do), the offense will be starting inside the 10 yard line (half the distance to the goal from the penalty spot) and your available plays inside your own 10 yard line are very limited and the defense usually gets more aggressive.

In my opinion, I'll take a dependable returner (rarely fumbles) who gets me to the 30 yard line on just about every kickoff over a returner who 1-2 times per year will give me a touchdown while a third of the time has my offense starting inside the 20 yard line or worse with penalties.

Why does this sound eerily similar to the JoePa debate two years ago? I know that's college but.......

We weren't so conservative on offense when Flo was our left tackle. I seem to remember being the fifth ranked offense in the NFL. Given our circumstances of UFA left tackle a sixth round rookie right tackle, and a right guard still recovering from a serious back injury, our offense is doing pretty well.

:laugh2:

I am sure that is his advice.

Tyson, once you get to the 35, just fall down!

That may be the silliest thing I have ever read on here.

Conservative in his old age ? I watched Giant games in the mid-late 80's he is coaching the EXACT same way he did when he was younger.

How does Keyshawn promote "conservatism" exactly?

Is it the way he comes up with a big catch on 3rd down to keep the offense on the field?
or
Is it the way he catches the sideline pass during the two minute drill to conserve the timeout?
or
Is it the way he consistently runs through no-man's land (middle of the field) and makes the suicide catch every game, no matter who's playing safety or linebacker?

Please respond. This ought to be good.

ALthought I would like Bill to open it up more, are you willing to live with the mistakes (INTs, Fumbles, etc.) that will happen on occasion when the offense is turned loose? I understand the frustration, but Bill is right about their being more risk in opening it up. I think it is a well balanced machine, he turns it loose when HE feels it is necessary.

Do I want to see more flash? Sure, but not at the cost of a W.

My two cents,

Bill knows what the heck he is doing and his age has nothing to do with anything.
