Try this on for size:
Dick Vermeil:
St. Louis, wins Super Bowl
Kansas City, hasn't made it to Super Bowl (& won't this year), has coached them since 2001
Mike Holmgren:
Green Bay, wins Super Bowl
Seattle, hasn't made it beyond first round of playoffs (may finally this year), has coached them since 1999
Bill Cowher--Pittsburgh, one Super Bowl appearance, has coached them since 1992
Jeff Fisher--Tennessee, one Super Bowl appearance, has coached them since 1995
Mike Shanahan--Denver, 2 Super Bowl wins with Elway, nothing since, has coached them since 1995
Tony Dungy--Indy, no Super Bowl appearances (& that's with Peyton Manning), has coached them since 2002
Jon Gruden--Tampa Bay, wins Super Bowl with team assembled by Dungy, two losing seasons since, has coached them since 2002
Marty Schottenheimer--San Diego, never made it beyond first round of playoffs, has coached them since 2002
oh yes,
& the sainted Jimmy Johnson:
Dallas--wins 2 Super Bowls
Miami--no Super Bowl appearances, he bails before his hand-picked successor totally destroys the franchise (& is now ruining Pitt)
New England--still playing with players chosen by Parcells (how important have Vinateri & Bruschi been this year?)
Jets--still playing with players chosen by Parcells (how critical has the loss of Martin been?)
Dallas--good young D players now in place for many years to come; yes, the O-line needs to be rebuilt
Just curious--how many of the coaches above should have been fired before now? How many of them have had more than 1 disappointing season? Yet most of them have solid teams now. (Fisher is having to rebuild but has some promising young talent.) Hmmm...maybe it sometimes takes time to rebuild a team.
So remind me again how Parcells is somehow a failure? But, hey, maybe the Cowboys should get on the merry-go-round of turning over coaches every 2-3 years. After all, it's worked so well for the Raiders, Commanders, Bills, 49ers, Browns.
