Parcell's View of Barber?

Anyone else feel like I've felt recently, watching Barber run? I feel like Parcells must be screaming at his TV set telling Barber to go FORWARD instead of SIDEWAYS. I love Barber. He is a blast to watch run. But these last couple of games it seems he is heading more east/west than north/south.

Am I missing it, or is there some validity to what I think I'm seeing?

I think he looked tenative against Washington for sure. Not so much against the Giants. I don't know what he was looking for but he was a little *too* patient this weekend. But I bet the coaches point it out to him on film.

He's been running sideline to sideline all year long! I love the guy too, but he's gotten lucky several times. It's biting him in the butt now.

You are correct. It has seemed that lately instead of hitting the hole, or if there is no hole, pushing his way forward, he keeps side stepping towards the sideline until there's no room left, and then he goes forward for a couple yards.

And Jones has actually had decent games lately too.

Why would anyone care what Parcells thinks anymore?

I don't care what Parcells thinks, I only mentioned him because I remember that he used to talk to "Marion" (can't you hear Parcells say his name?), about wanting to be a scat back sometimes instead of the train that he is.

I can't believe our RB coach isn't on his butt about it. It's non productive to constantly run up to the line and stop and then run sideways. I love MB3 but he is not anywhere near fast enough to bounce it outside like that on every run.

I would love to see this offense with a real speed RB with instincts and vision. Combine that with MB3's toughness and we would be a consistent force.

Well it seems like at least gets positive yards when he turns the corner at the last minute. This past game he had a couple of 5+ yard gains doing that.

It isn't ridiculously effective when he bounces to the outside but to be honest I have no problem with it. In most cases I'd say it results in bigger gains than it would if he just continued up the middle and dived into the pile (which is frustrating sometimes in itself).

He isn't Adrian Peterson. But I still trust MB3's instincts.

i have noticed that as well

the other thing i was noticing which confused me, was that it seemed like all the toss plays to the outside were going to Barber, and Jones was getting the runs up the gut...

does that seem odd to anyone else? it seems to me the plays that best utilize Jones' ability is toss plays and draws, and then use Barber to bash inside...

i'm sure the coaches have good reasoning for this, i would just like to hear it

Yes...quite interesting. I think we've noticed this for at least two years now. I wonder what they see in practice that we don't. I found myself wishing that we had run JJ more during this game. Strange...but true.

That about sums it up.

He will get back to turning the corner and slamming bodies to the ground in his wake.

A few off games no biggie. Teams are dedicating to stopping the run.

Pretty much. I wouldn't start being too critical of Barber's play so quickly. He may be in a slump but there isn't any one thing that stands out about his running that has lead to it.

Lets put away the damnation oil. :D

I love Barber...but he is not a franchise RB...he is a 12 -15 carry RB. If these guys like Barber and Crayton and Columbo want to be part of something special, then I am all for bringing them back....but they are complimentary pieces, not STUDS. The studs are Ware, Newman, Romo, TO, Witten etc....those are the specical players that deserve the BIG money...this happened in the 90s when everyone wanted every Cowboy coach and free agent...and we have not even WON ANYTHING yet....this draft is going to be very important because we are going to have to let some significant contributors go

Barber plays how he plays -- it is exciting -- he fights for yards but he sometimes makes poor decisions. He's been given a chance to rip the job from JJ's hands but hasn't done it b/c he can't show that he can run the ball effectively early in games.

I like what Barber brings to the team but I don't think he'll ever be that starter we are after.

I wish JJ would use his speed to run sideways, they need to flip directions..

I think every running back ever has thought he can do a little Barry Sanders/Gayle Sayers. Its up to the coaches to beat it out of the ones that really should not try.

You mean you want them to be programmed?

The truth is that none of our RB's are the stereotypes that people want to pidgeonhole them into. I'm not sure that Julius isn't the better short yardage back and MB3 isn't the better big play back. MB3 is not a pure power runner. He doesn't bowl over linebackers between the tackles. He likes to get out in space, and he's strong enough and violent enough as a runner to give smaller defensive backs fits trying to tackle him. He's not someone who likes to plow into the line and bowl over a linebacker. He bounces off tackles more than he breaks through them.

Likewise, Julius isn't really a "big play" threat back even though he has great speed. He runs very hard and very fast into the designated hole, gets to the second level and promptly gets tackled by the first linebacker or safety that gets to him.
