A combo of Terence Newman, Anthony Henry, Jacques Reeves, Ken Hamlin and Roy Williams averaged 213.1 net passing yards allowed per game in 2007, which was 13th best in the league.

  • Week 02: Dolphins 273 yards
  • Week 03: Bears 164 yards
  • Week 04: Rams 125 yards
  • Week 05: Bills 148 yards
  • Week 06: Patriots 373 yards
  • Week 07: Vikings 65 yards
  • Week 09: Eagles 250 yards
  • Week 10: Giants 243 yards
  • Week 11: Commanders 361 yards
  • Week 12: Jets 120 yards

  • Week 14: Lions 238 yards
  • Week 15: Eagles 181 yards
  • Week 16: Panthers 147 yards

It depends on how many pass plays our opponents run this season. Net yards per game isn't important. Net yards per play is.

The question is whether we can improve on our 5.4 yards allowed per pass play, which ranked seventh-best in the NFL.

Your Commanders also had 90 pass plays in two games against us.

Hey, if you had 720 pass plays in a season, you might have a top-10 offense!

I wonder how many of these yards we gave up when the game was already over. A few teams had late drives that didn't matter when we were playing backups and prevent if memory serves me correct.

No, I think pressure up front will be more help to the passing game than anything else.

I can not disagree more with these stats. Games are not about stats, if that were the case we would of been in the Superbowl last year. Ill throw up the numbers again and comment below.

Week 01: Giants 314 yards
They dominated us. They went up and down the field on our pass d. Thank our O for this game.

Week 02: Dolphins 273 yards
This game had I beileve 4 recievers with 5 or more catches. I know Chambers had 9 and Booker had 7. Not very dominate. This game was alot closer than the score indicated too.

Week 03: Bears 164 yards
If Berrian catches a wide open bomb that 164 might of turned into 250 plus. Your talking Rex Grossman as well, and if Berrian catches that ball your giving up at least 230 to him. Not good again.

Week 04: Rams 125 yards
The Rams had their 4th string offensive line in this game. I remember they were down to only having their long snapper as a reserve to an already depleted oline.

Week 05: Bills 148 yards
Played good in this game.

Week 06: Patriots 373 yards
We were exposed. How many times does the Pats have a 3rd and 7 and convert? They must of did that at least 10x that game.

Week 07: Vikings 65 yards
Good game but its Tarvius Jackson????? Are you impressed by that???

Week 09: Eagles 250 yards
In the first half, they moved the ball pretty good through the air. They played better in this game though. Good game by us.

Week 10: Giants 243 yards
I still say we didnt play well in this one. The Giants are a good passing team though.

Week 11: Commanders 361 yards
I was so mad after this game. It was like we were playing a vanilla defense in the preseason. The Skins went up and down the field on us. How we won this game is beyond me. There was so many open areas in zones in this one.

Week 12: Jets 120 yards
Good game but its the Jets passing attack. Cant be impressed here.

Week 13: Packers 233 yards
They almost came back passing the ball up and down the field in the second half. This 233 was in about 2 and a half quarters. I dont see how you can say they played well in this game after Favre went out.

Week 14: Lions 238 yards
The Lions ran the ball well in this one. Whenever they needed a pass they got it. This was Newmans worst game of the year.

Week 15: Eagles 181 yards
The played well in this one.

Week 16: Panthers 147 yards
Sure it was a 147?????? Smith had a 137 by himself on 9 catches. It was 182 total. They played well in this one though.

Week 17: Commanders 223 yards
Null

Lets see we stopped

Rex Grossman
Marc Bulger with a CFL OLine
Tarvius Jackson
Chad Pennington
Trent Edwards first start
Matt Moore

Stats are decieving folks. So we stopped those guys that made are stats look decieving. Are you impressed by that????

The true stat is when we played a good QB we werent as strong and our flaws throughout the year became apparent in the playoffs with the long catch and run on the first drive and right before the half the Giants walked up the field on us. These flaws were hidden all year by our dominate offense. We would just outscore teams. When we started to struggle the pass defense stuck out.

A season's worth of stats aren't deceiving if you know what you're looking at.

Every other defense faced the same types of teams, the same type of quarterbacks, the same type of receivers. And we fared better than most defenses at stopping them, especially considering how often our opponents had to pass the ball (the fourth-most in the league), usually because they were behind. The fact that we did that without Newman for part of the season and without a healthy Newman at all -- and without Henry for part of the season and without a healthy Henry for much of the season -- is impressive, compared to what almost every other defense in the league did.

This is a day of days. We agree!

Actually they will both feed off of each other, making both improve.

Our pass D was our glaring weak spot last year. For the umpteenth time you cannot evaluate with stats alone. Nor can you just subjectively look at the game without looking at film and stats.

When our pass rush failed us our pass D was exposed at times.

I don't care how many stats are pulled out of the hat. We needed to fix our pass defense. It appears to me we may have done just that.

Have you compared our games with those of the Superbowl champs? Seems like they gave up much more to us than we did to them, even in the playoffs. You mention us stopping Jackson, who walked away from Dallas with a loss and a QB rating of 44, yet didn't mention that he walked away with a QB rating of 139 vs. the Superbowl champs and a sizeable win. Brett Favre is no slouch. He put up a modest 112 rating with 3 TDS against the Giants, but a 8 rating with 2 INTs against us. Winning the Superbowl has nothing to do with the regular season. We had one bad game against the Giants, which we led in almost every statistical category, that knocked us out of the Superbowl hunt. To say forget about the stats because we didn't win the Superbowl is a bit shortsighted.

I agree and I don't. I agree that our pass D was a glaring weak spot on the team last year, however I feel that it compared favorably to the rest of the NFL.

The misconception out there is our team is the only one giving up first downs; our team is the only one giving up yards and touchdowns to good QBs; our team is the only one that bumps their stats up feasting on crummy QBs; our team is the only one that had the offense bail out the defense, etc.

This misconception is fueled by the fact that fans on this board may watch a couple games here and there of another team, but not as many as they do the Dallas Cowboys.

Can the Cowboys improve upon last year's play? Definately. Were they as good as the stats indicate? That's debateable. Were they as bad as some make out? Nope, not any worse than every other defensive secondary in a pass-friendly NFL.

Forget the numbers. There isn't any one in the secondary this season who is going to be picked on.

Wade is going to be able to man these guys up and force the QB's to make decisions under duress by using more exotic looks and blitzes.

Bottom line is that the defense should be top 5 in stats, big plays and in 'coming up big in key moments'. That last category is the most important for me. There were too many times last season where it seemed the defense could not get off the field when they needed to.

Some Eexamples: 1st Giants game (all game), Packers(second half), 1st Skins (all game), Lions (right up until the last five minutes) and Giants playoff game (right before half).
