Pretty depressing. Surprised you haven't been chastised yet as a Cowboy pessimist for posting these statistics. I appreciate posts that highlight where we could improve but doubt this organization can even recognize the problem, much less fix it. And if by some chance they do address this problem, by the time they fix this there will be another glaring problem in some other area.

It all goes back to our front office (Jerry) being reactive and not proactive (i.e. no plan, just plug holes).

And some people blame Romo.

While the DL is an obvious weakness that has to be addresed early an often, I would not be against taking a free safety in the first. We need a good one playing next to Church.

Looks about right. Our Pass [D]efense has just driven me right out of my mind for years now. Right about since Woody was lost, methinks.

Basically this is Percy pimp handing all the folks whining about our "ineffective" offense.

This post is just downright offensive.

And I'll show myself out.

So what you're saying is Romo is good, and our secondary sucks?

Film at 11.

Another great post that illustrates exactly what the problem is in Dallas. Why we're not all on the same page regarding what the obvious overriding issue is this particular offseason absolutely befuddles me.

Stunned how many people want to get rid of a franchise quarterback while so many others are obsessed with the idea of keeping DeMarcus Ware. The player most responsible for keeping our defense in this albatross.

Fixing this defensive line will completely change how we play on defense. We have to get after the quarterback.

We drafted both Wilcox and Johnson pretty high. We're going to have to give them the opportunity to produce.

For those who think the secondary is the main problem, I would suggest that it isn't the secondary.

We've retooled the secondary already, yet we have the same exact results.

Remember that our starters used to be Newman and Jenkins, both of whom are now gone, and actually producing better on other teams.

What hasn't changed on the other hand is the pass rush. And that is what we have been paying Ware not to do. That is what we paid Spencer and Ratliff not to do...

It's why this team has sucked so badly, thinking that we can rely on scrubs across the line.

Granted the defensive line needs help.

But keep in mind that over the last 3 seasons the defense is 17th in sacks.

So while it has been mired near the bottom of the NFL in pass defense it has been closer to average when it comes to sacks.

The bad pass defense numbers are greatly "enhanced" by the lousy coverage provided by the linebackers... Even Lee had his breakdowns this season due to being overly aggressive on play-action.

DL depth, and the drop off in play from Demarcus Ware were huge issues last year, obviously. But our S play has been inadequate for the entire three years covered by this OP. I don't think we can stand pat in either area. We need a play maker in the backfield, and at least two along the DL. We've got some internal candidates who can develop, but who you can't really count on at S, one guy in Crawford you can feel good about at DL, but otherwise the cupboard is bare. It's a tall order with little cap space in one offseason and question marks at DC.

while i agree with you here, going forward, ware is likely going to be a situational rusher and cannot be counted on to be a full time starter until he proves it, spencer is younger but has been far less productive and was injured all year, hatcher should leave if we dont pay him (and we should not), crawford is completely unknown and the rest are back-ups at best

i would submit that we need 3 new DL starters next year and a true FS starter
likely also need a plan at LB since carter has been subpar and lee is constantly injured

these players need to be starting caliber and none of these players can be a "prayer" or "hope" that they pan out

it is a tall order becasue the cupboard is pretty bare due to very very poor planning

I often want improvement on the offense (and there are times that's justified). But it's tough to see 3 games in a season where the other team's offense doesn't even punt in a game, and you do.

Hard to remember that isn't normal - that our defense is really that bad.

This team needs defensive lineman, linebackers and safeties badly. I agree that safety is an issue but it won't make a lick of difference at the end of the day if they can't pressure the QB. But, we are middle of the road on sacks? So what, the key is pressure and more pressure.

Ware might get his 10 or so next season(doubt it or for some other team) but it won't make much of a difference, he still can't contain the edge very well and overruns plays too often. I like Selvie but more as a rotational player. There are a couple of guys coming back but not sure how much of a difference that will make and I suspect Hatcher will be gone along with Spencer.

They can't keep plugging in journeymen to play every week, we need some quality players starting with the draft and a few key FA's. They key to a good defense starts up front, not from the secondary. This team has been built from the outside in for quite a few years now and that has to stop and reversed.

We could also use at least one more play-making linebacker(that stays healthy) that is good at the run and pass.

For the draft, I want to see either an end or a tackle drafted first with the remaining position drafted in the 2nd. If a viable safety(not a project) is there in the 3rd, grab him.

12-4 offense
3-13 defense...and that is being polite

10-6 special teams ;)

It probably is not the only problem, but all I can say that when I watch a team like Seattle, yes the pass rush is better, but the pass coverage is also considerably better as well. We don't cover nearly as well as the best teams.

Find a pass rush and stop forcing players into a scheme that doesn't take advantage of their strength's while exposing their weaknesses and you'll see improvement.
