Pass Rush

We started getting good pressure towards end of game with a nice lead and running a four man line, but was anyone else concerned with the lack of rush in the first half...seemed like Brunnell could stand back there all day if he wanted to. Samuels was having his way with Ware early on and the front 3 were getting no penetration.

Without the blitz, we still have questionable pass rush (though I do give Zimmer credit for having a blitz package that was very effective this week). I came away with concerns about the pass rush and our kick coverage team (looked like a couple more were going to break).

Otherwise, a great win...hopefully something to build on.

The difference between this team and its pass rush ability out of a 3-man line and the 4-man line is huge.

#1. Canty, Ferguson & Spears are not good pass rushers.
#2. Ratliff and Hackett seem to be better pass rushers at this point.
#3. Quite often with the 3-man front neither Ellis nor Ware are involved in the pass rush.

It was late in the game but Hatcher had a really nice speed rush on Samuels that ended in a sack. Hope to see him more.

it's still a concern to me...it was definitely better last night than vs Jacksonville, but as you mention there were still way too many plays where Brunell had a lot of time

lets see if they can put some heat on the Tennessee QB and then against Philly on the road...

Yes, although the pass rush was not extraordinary, a strong 2nd half pass rush is still something worth talking about. By the second half our D-line and LBers were able to break down the WASH O-Line preventing any type of surmountable offense. I think that they are on the right road to being a dominate pass rush team.

I agree

Thanks Mr Winicki but I am sure Mr Hatcher would take exception.

:p:

It should be tested against Tennessee. I have a feeling that the Titans will be starting Vince Young by week 4. The Dline did have a little trouble against a semi-mobile QB in Leftwitch. THey had no problem containing a slow QB like Brunell.

I hope the Titans start Young b/c his mobility can only help the defense figure itself out as they head into the game @ Philly and another QB with good feet.

LOL!

I keep calling Hatcher "Hackett". Thanks for pointing it out Brainpoint. ;)

I think you have the two Qb's mixed up. Brunell is much more mobile, even at this point in his career, than Leftwitch has ever been. That said, I think the Commanders have a pretty good O-line. The cowboys did an ok job of pressuring the Qb.......thanks to the coverage from the secondary.

What did we have six sacks?ur crazy.

In the first half, the Skins only ran 28 plays, and 11 of those plays were runs. Of the 17 designed passes, 3 were to the backs.

Nevertheless, in the first half, the Cowboys had 2 sacks on 14 "real" pass plays. Ware also had a QB pressure that ended in a penalty. There were probably other pressures that I am not listing here. Brunell threw a couple of passes away when the pressure got close.

I think there was plenty of pass rush early on. If you think there wasn't, your expectations are a little too high, IMO.

That's what I saw too. It was one of the things that was being talked about in the chat at halftime, in fact. Probably also on the game thread if anybody wants to check.

Exactly -- we got good pressure early - then the sacks started to pile up when the Skins had to throw on every down. When a team gets a lot of sacks that is almost always the story.

Problem here is that folks got 8 sacks in the first half when they played the Skins on Madden - so they expect more.

Why don't we move Ware around like we did when he recorded his first sack?

No running back can match him one-on-one. It seemed as if that was a good strategy. Why don't we employ it more often?
