I know we're consumed here generally with Roy vs. Taylor debates, but I really feel Watkins has progressed to the point where we can start the comparisons to Taylor, which is nice, because those two actually play the same position.
Taylor, proclaimed by all Skins fans to be one of the most talented players in the league, and an almost sure-fire HOF candidate, has really stepped up his game this year. In years past, he would wait until the worst possible moment to get torched and cost his team the game. This year, he's been doing his level-best to get completely outclassed in at least every game. His performance in this regard has been remarkable.
Reached by phone, Taylor said; "I've come a long way, obviously. I made some great plays early in my career. Hell, I even fooled the fans into thinking that I could cover Randy Moss 1 on 1, by batting away a few badly underthrown balls. This year, I've managed to get beat by every #2 WR we've faced, and even some 1's and 2's."
Strong words indeed.
Watkins is a fledgeling in the league, just coming into his own. His team rarely heard about him the first three weeks, not a bad thing for a rookie. This week, however, he showed that he really wanted to be talked about in the same vein as Taylor.
"I've admired Sean since he was in Miami, getting trucked by Greg Jones. I've tried to emulate that tackling style in the NFL. Another thing I've really tried to take from him is an ability to be completely fooled on any double move. I think, and you'll excuse me for being a little cocky here, that I've taken it to the next level, not being able to tackle a guy like Hank Baskett. I'm pretty confident Taylor would have made that tackle. Maybe he's looking up at me now, huh?"
What do you think Zoners? Who's the more incompetent Free Safety?
